Description

The mission of Garnet Career Center is to provide adult learners educational opportunities necessary to attain their chosen goals.

Garnet Career Center is located in downtown Charleston, WV on Dickinson Street (one block from the Exit 100 Capitol Street ramp off I-64). Garnet has been operated and funded by Kanawha County Schools since 1971. The building was constructed in 1936 and served as a senior high school for black students until 1956. The building has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of Interior.

Garnet Career Center serves adult learners through career and technical programs which offer the opportunity for students to gain a new career. These programs include Automotive Technology, Business Education, and Licensed Practical Nursing. Our students are provided with an education that will make a difference in their lives. The instructional staff is committed to our students to build technical skills, develop positive workplace attitudes, and assist all students to become successful.

Garnet Career Center also serves the adult learner through the Adult Basic Education (ABE) Learning Center. Adults may attend the learning center to develop reading skills, improve language, and advance their mathematics. Many adults use the learning center to prepare for taking the GED® test. Participating in the learning center and taking the GED® is offered as a free service to the general public.
