Laney College is an institution in Oakland, California, providing lifelong learning opportunities in academic and career programs to diverse cultural and social economic communities. The College fulfills this mission by offering optimal student support services and working with other organizations to address the local and global educational needs of our community to maximize access and student learning outcomes.

Laney was founded in 1953. The college takes its name from Joseph C. Laney (1880-1948), a
journalist, businessman, and former president of the Oakland Unified School District Board of
Education. Laney joined the Peralta Community College District in 1964.

Laney offers 32 Associate of Arts and 12 Associate of Science Degrees as well as 28 Certificate Programs. There are about 900 classes each semester in the liberal arts and science fields.

Today, Laney is the largest of the four Peralta campuses. The Peralta Community College
District is comprised of Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College.

Laney College occupies a beautiful 60-acre campus adjacent to the Oakland Museum and Lake
Merritt BART Station. It is a short walk to historic Chinatown, scenic Lake Merritt, and the
resurgent downtown Oakland.
