Nursing scholarships are readily available to nearly everyone who chooses to pursue this profession. Due to the fact that the financial aid is offered through the Federal Government, the armed services, private organizations, and universities across the country.
If you are a nursing student, do your due diligence and fully explore the scholarship opportunities that may be available to you.
- Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Nursing Scholarship Program
Award: Full scholarship covering tuition in its entirety.
Overview: The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) of all three branches of the United States Armed Forces (Air Force, Navy, and Army) offer nursing programs and scholarships for nurses. Those who enroll will have their entire tuition paid for by the armed forces, but will be required to participate in mandatory ROTC activities in and out of the classroom, and must pledge service to their particular branch upon graduation.
Requirements: Applicants must pass an Officer Qualifying Test as well as a physical fitness test, possess a GPA of at least 2.5, and must be majoring in nursing or a related field. Non-U.S. citizens will not be considered.
How to apply: Contact your school’s ROTC office for the appropriate application materials and deadline information.
- U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration Nursing Scholarship Program
Award: Tuition, monthly stipend (approximately $1,200) and fees to cover books, instruments, and lab wear.
Overview: Every year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers a nursing scholarship program through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The program is designed to offer financial aid to students in exchange for at least two years of service at a health care facility somewhere in the United States that operates with a shortage of nurses.
Requirements: Applicants must be U.S. citizens enrolled in a nursing program at an accredited school of nursing with no Federal judgment liens, service commitments, or Federal debt. Preference is given to students in serious financial need.
How to apply: Before you can apply, you must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FASFA). From there, head to the HRSA nursing scholarship website to apply online.
- University of Central Florida Nirvana Health Services Endowed Scholarship
Award: Varies from year to year based on available funding.
Overview: Each year, the Nirvana Health Services Endowed Scholarship is awarded to one student currently enrolled in the University of Central Florida school of nursing.
Requirements: A 3.0 GPA is mandatory of all applicants. If students meet this criteria, they must submit a one-page personal statement and degree audit. Applicants must have shown a history of volunteer work within the local nursing community.
How to apply: Applications are taken online via the Nirvana Health Services Endowed Scholarship website.
