New York University's mission is to be an international center of scholarship, teaching and research defined by a culture of academic excellence and innovation. That mission involves retaining and attracting outstanding faculty, encouraging them to create programs that draw the best students, having students learn from faculty who are leaders in their fields, and shaping an intellectually rich environment for faculty and students both inside and outside the classroom. In reaching for excellence, NYU seeks to take academic and cultural advantage of its location in New York City and to embrace diversity among faculty, staff and students to ensure the widest possible range of perspectives, including international perspectives, in the educational experience.
< CollapseNew York University (NYU) is a private, nonsectarian, coeducational research university in New York City. NYU's main campus is situated in the Greenwich Village section of Manhattan. Founded in 1831, NYU is the largest private, nonprofit institution of higher education in the United States, with an enrollment of more than 40,000.
NYU consists of 16 schools, colleges, and divisions, located in six centers throughout Manhattan. NYU operates study abroad facilities in London, Paris, Florence, Prague, Madrid, Berlin, Accra, Shanghai, and Singapore, and has just announced facilities slated to open Spring 2008 in Tel Aviv and Buenos Aires.
Most recently, the government of the United Arab Emirates has announced plans to fund a campus abroad for NYU in the capital city of Abu Dhabi, the first of its kind to be established abroad by a major U.S. research university, which is set to receive students by 2010. Additional proposed sites are being finalized in the Persian Gulf Region and the Middle East.
In a deal recently approved by its board and state regulators, Polytechnic University, an engineering and technology university located in Brooklyn, New York, will merge into NYU becoming the Polytechnic Institute of New York University and providing NYU with an engineering school for the first time in three decades.
For four consecutive years NYU has been ranked as America's "#1 dream school" by The Princeton Review. NYU counts 31 Nobel Prize winners; 2 Abel Prize winners; 9 National Medal of Science recipients; 16 Pulitzer Prize winners; 19 Academy Award winners (more than any other American university); Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winners; and MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowship holders among its past and present graduates and faculty.

I know a lot of people have asked this, but I thought I would just put it out there. I am a rising senior in high school and have a cumulative GPA of 3.7. I have only taken one AP class (AP US History), but my school does not offer that many to juniors, so this is actually more than most juniors take. I got a 1310 on my SAT I's, but I plan on retaking them and I am almost sure I will get at least a 1380. I have not taken my SAT II's yet but have been practicing and I am sure I will do well on those. I have 200+ community service hours and will recieve an award for recieving that many. I am president of FCCLA and Science Club and Vice President of Ecology Club. I am also in French Club, NHS, Naional French Honor Society, Peer Helpers, and Medical Club. This summer, I currently am part of a youth advisory council to create a health program for intercity youth, help to raise funds for the Uganda Rural Fund and am in the Book club at the library. Also, I am African American.

Question:
New York University Admissions?
Hey guys. I really have my heart set on NYU. I don't have a positive grade trend, but I also don't have a declining one. It's just A-s randomly scattered across my transcript. I also have one B. I try to be involved. I'm about to enter my senior year in high school. I will have three years of tennis, one year of cross country, three years of newspaper/yearbook staff (two years newspaper editor), and two years of college in the high school. I'm also going to hold a position on the student council at a local community college this coming year. I have a 3.9 and a 1850 SAT score (I'll be taking it again in October, hoping for better results. I got a 660 in math but a 580 in writing.)
I'd appreciate it if only actual NYU students answered this:
What do you think my chances of getting in are? Also, despite NYU's financial aid standards, I know for a fact that my $100k/year family will be able to contribute little to my college education. What are my chances of receiving financial aid?

Those SATs aren't going to pave the way at a top-tier private institution. They're more along the lines of what you might expect to see at a decent state university. Not sure how you're going to bump up those scores significantly without a concrete plan.

Can you say what is the monthly fee of the New York University to complete Phd. in electrical engineering. If I want to start from master's level. Please give me the medium expensive fee that is not for low expensive universities and not for high expensive universities.
Best Answer
I am not aware of an electrical engineering program at New York University (NYU). There may be one at one of the state universities (SUNY) and their prices will be significantly lower than NYU. Typically graduate credits at NYU are approximately $700/credit and up. At a SUNY campus, it will be probably half that. Good luck.

Question:
New York University?
I have a GPA of 3.8 and received a 1900 on my SATs. Am I good enough to even consider applying to NYU or should I aim lower?

Best Answer
Assuming that you also have some extra curricular activities to show that you are more than just an academic and some AP classes under your belt, you should be able to apply to any University in the country.
It is still a good idea to send some applications off to other schools just in case.
Go for it!!!

I want to go to college for film and television. FSU pays for the expenses for your film and NYU's TISCH is one of the best in the country. Which one do you think i should go to? which one is cheaper to go to? which one is harder to get in to?
Best Answer
NYU will offer more opportunities than FSU can ever conjure up. This is due to NYU's reputation and location. NYU is expensive and hard to get into. If you can financially afford it. I would definitely go with NYU.
Good Luck!!

It depends on what field you want to specialize in. I know that NYU has some of the country's best doctors in neurology and cardiology.
If i'm not mistaken, Dr. Tagliati is either part of Mount Sinai School of Medicine or NYU. He has recently been developing breakthrough research in DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation) to treat patients suffering from Parkinson's Disease. If you don't catch a hold of him at the medical school, try joining the New York marathon or fund-raisers that help with AIDS and Parkinson's.
Other than that, NYU has outstanding placement into some of the most highly competative residency programs in the country, with connections to the top 10 hospitals in New York, and potential for fellowships at schools like Johns Hopkins & Harvard.

Question:
new york university?
i'm a sophomore with a gpa of 3.86. i've taken all regular classes including physical science( i shouldn't have taken it) last year. and this year, i'm taking all honors
i really want to attend nyu so i'm going to apply for early decision. but the problem is that in my junior year, there is only one AP class i can take. in my senior year i'll be taking 4 but for early decision, you apply in november so they won't really be seeing how you are doing in my ap classes. do you think they really care a lot about ap classes and do you think i have good chance?
i'm in debate, key club, band, and national honors society.
thanks
there's a typo
'they won't really be seeing how you are doing in my ap classes.'
should be they won't really be seeing how i'm doing in my ap classes.

I really don't think it matters in the long run. Current GPA, activities, ACT/SAT scores and entrance essays are all they look at. They one care about how you are doing in 4 little classes. The GPA tells them that you are committed to making the most out of your eduaction in the long run.

How hard is it to get into New York University? And if I don't have anything to put in my portfolio what do i do? I would like to major in film and television...but I have no portfolio. Any advice? Deadline is coming in about March or April. Thanks.

Very hard to get in! Tisch School of Arts is one of the best in the country, and an amazing portfolio is crucial. It is the one thing the school can look at and see your talent and potential.
Luckly, Tisch only requires that you submit one peice of creative work for your portfolio (10 minute film, storyboard, photographs, or dramatic/ creative writing sample). And you have plenty of time to create any of these things before April. But remember, the portfolios the school sees are some of the best peices of work in the country, so make sure your submission is excellent!
Just for you to get an idea- I am going to apply to Tisch for the graduate program for film and TV next year (and getting accepted is so hard, I would drop out of law school to attend!). For the graduate studies, the film submission has to be 30 minutes (or less) and I am going to start working on it now for the Decemeber 2007 deadline! That's how good it needs to be!
Getting accepted to NYU in general is really tought. But for film, it is extremely tough! You need to be one of the best candidates in the world. Yes, it is a world-renowned program for film! Truthfully, if you don't have something amazing to put in your portfilio, you may not even want to apply.
But you still have time!!!!!! Make something great!!!! And remember, you will also need top grades, top SAT scores, and impressive letters of recommendation. It all needs to be the best to get accepted. But you can do it. Start NOW!
And they have awesome film programs abroad during the summer. If you don't get in, or want to do something before school starts, you could do those (not very hard to get in) for the summer. If you need to reapply next year, you will have some amazing work for your portfolio and some great experience to put on your application. Plus it would be a great opportunity to study film at one of the best schools!

From your experiences, how has the massive student body size seem to you? Is it hard to get to know people if you definitely do not want to join a sorority/fraternity? How's the campus life? I've heard there's actually no campus and it's just buildings throughout NYC; is that true? Is the Stern School of Business good, and does it have a connection with the Wharton School at UPenn?
Oh yeah, and lastly, can I email you if I have more questions?
Thanks for taking the time to read my question... and hopefully respond to it.

I visited NYU just recently, It's true that they have basically no campus - they are in downtown New York. You walk out of the front door of your dorm onto the city street. Several young friends who go there say that NYU would be a bad choice for anyone who is a little bit of a loner or very shy - it is not easy to meet other people and if you were to get depressed and hide in your room no one would notice or care. New York is a really bad place to be if you can't deal with being isolated, and can't proactively find friends. The upside of NYU is that it is full of smart students, good profs (the Stern school is very highly respected!) , and it is in the middle of NYC. That is NOT the right choice for everyone, but if it is the right choice for you, you might love it!
If you want a little bit less urban situation, look at schools in Boston, Washington DC or Chicago. OR look at some of the schools that are within a couple hours of NYC but not in the city itself... like Drew, Rutgers, UConn, etc. Also, Fordham is an excellent school that is in NYC but actually has a nice campus.

What other schools are good in the area?Temple, UPENN, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia?
Best Answer
NYU is one of the best universities in the country. Many top private universities only admit graduate students to PhD programs in academic fields -- giving out an MS to those who fail to complete the PhD. NYU, however, does have terminal MS in Biology and would be an excellent choice.
The other schools you mention are not in the area. Philadelphia is two hours away from NYC. Of those schools, U Penn is clearly the best.

Write a killer essay. When I applied, they had several topics to pick from, most of them dealing with your creativity. Other than that, work on your grades, take the SAT again (scores usually increase the second time) and do anything you can do be involved in film, like joining or starting a film club, making your own films, taking film classes at your local JC, etc.

Question:
The cost of New York University?
I'd like to know if anyone here is attending the NYU Steinhardt School of Education, especially it's graduate program in International Education.
I was accepted for the program mentioned above for the Spring term but after receiving my financial package I decided to upgrade my application for September. I know is a very prestigious School. I did get a scholarship but the one I got doesn't even cover half of tuition and what they offer me was over $24,000 in loans for this semester alone, which means that it will amount close to or over $ 50,000 in just one year. I'm still not quite sure if I want to be in this much debt.
If anyone can give some uselful advice I'd appreciated and I would appreciate equally those that don't have anything constructive to say to stay away. This is something that has me thinking a lot and at this point I don't know what to choose.
I forgot to point out that although this is a degree in the field of Education I would not be working as a teacher in a school. This program focuses mainly in working with public and private organizations that sponsor educational and cross cultural exchanges in different parts of the globe.

My mother graduated from that program and NYU is a great school (my grandfather still teaches there). I have been to the campus many times. However, it is a very expensive school to attend as well. If you want to go to top notch education program you wont find any better. It real matters what you want. If you are just interested in getting a degree in teaching I would suggest just going to your local state school.
Good Luck!!!

You have a shot. The average GMAT at top schools is a little higher than yours -- but your GPA is in the right range, and you have plenty of work experience.

Hi, I'm planning on attending the recorded music program @ NYU for my junior year. I'm attending a community college at the moment and well on my way to receiving an associates degree in commercial music. I have also completed my general ed. (based on university of california standards). In addition to my recommendation and portfolio, what would you say are other determining factors for admittance?

Best Answer
If that specific program requires you to write a personal statement as part of the application, then make sure it's flawless and great in every way. I know some people who had horrible grades, but got into NYU's competitive film program because of their personal statement. I'm assuming NYU takes personal statements very seriously. So make sure it's a good one. Good luck, I hope you get in!!

I would go for NYU because it is more probable to get in, but if you get into both, go to Cornell because the prestige of an Ivy League can't be compared by NYU.
