The mission of Wake Technical Community College is to help improve and enrich lives by meeting the lifelong educational training, and service needs of its diverse community. The College is committed to promoting individual success in the workplace and higher education and to promoting cultural, social, and economic development.
In pursuit of its mission, this public two-year comprehensive postsecondary educational institution adheres to an open-door policy by offering quality accessible and affordable educational opportunities to all adults regardless of age, sex, socioeconomic status, ethnic origin, race, religion, or disability. To meet the needs of its community, the College focuses on providing support services, resources, community outreach, and partnerships; programs in basic skills development; vocational, technical and occupational training, and college/university transfer preparation.
Wake Technical Community College, commonly known as Wake Tech, is a two-year accredited institution of higher education and technical training school, is located approximately five miles south of Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina and county seat of Wake County. Wake Tech is part of the North Carolina Community College System, a state-supported body of 58 institutions throughout North Carolina.
Current student enrollment is 57,000 and is projected to grow to 78,000 by 2015.
Wake Tech was founded on April 3, 1958 as the Wake County Industrial Education Center. The school opened its doors on October 7, 1963, with 304 enrolled students, 34 of whom were registered in curriculum studies and 270 who were enrolled in vocational training programs. The school became Wake Technical Community College on December 1, 1987.
Wake Technical Community College first received school accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1969.
In the 2008-2009 academic year, Wake Tech will add sports teams. Volleyball, men's soccer, and golf teams will start in fall 2008, and basketball, softball, and baseball will start later. The school's mascot is currently the Eagle, though a contest is underway to come up with a new mascot.
Today, Wake Tech offers 90 curriculum educational programs, including health sciences, business education, and college-university transfer programs leading to bachelors' degrees at four-year institutions. It also offers Early College high schools, part of the Wake County Public School System.
The main campus is located near McCullers Crossroads on US 401 between Raleigh and Fuquay-Varina. It consists of 13 buildings, most of which contain classrooms and faculty offices. Other buildings include Student Services, Bookstore, Independent Learning Center, and a Child Care Facility.
