School Description

Provided by Northeastern Illinois University

Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) is dedicated to both excellence and access. The most important facets of the university's mission are to offer high quality undergraduate and graduate programs to a broad spectrum of students and to foster student growth and development. To these ends, the university attaches primary importance to excellence in teaching. Since program quality is enhanced by professional activities beyond the classroom on the part of the faculty, emphasis is also given to pure and applied research and to academic and public service.

Unique to Northeastern's mission are the two distinctive features of diversity and community partnerships. Because of its location in the Chicago metropolitan area, the university serves a population which is diverse in age, culture, language, and race. This diversity, a major asset, means that the academic programs utilize a variety of perspectives to enrich the teaching and learning experience and to prepare students for the multiculturalism which characterizes our society. The university's location also provides students and faculty with many opportunities to integrate field-based learning, research, and service with classroom instruction.

Northeastern Illinois University preserves the finest traditions of university education, augmented by active involvement in the metropolitan area, on behalf of the residents of Illinois.

Northeastern Illinois University

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) is a public state university located in the North Park community area of Chicago, Illinois. NEIU primarily serves commuter students in the Chicago metropolitan area. The school's predecessor began in 1867 as Cook County's first teachers' college. The school was ranked the most ethnically diverse university in the Midwest according to U.S. News & World Reports.

The school's demographics are: 49% White, 25% Hispanic, 12% African American, 10% Asian and 4% other.

History

The origins of the school can be traced to Cook County Normal School (now Chicago State University), which was founded in 1867 in Englewood, Illinois. That school became known as Chicago Teachers College after three name changes.

In 1949, a branch of Chicago Teachers College was established on the North Side of Chicago. Chicago Teachers College (North Side) relocated to the present site of the university in 1961. The school changed its name again in 1965 to Illinois Teachers' College: Chicago North after the state of Illinois assumed control of the college.

In 1967, the college was renamed Northeastern Illinois State College.

In 1971, the College became Northeastern Illinois University, which was given a mandate by the Illinois Legislature "to offer such courses of instruction as shall best serve to qualify teachers for the schools of the State; and to offer such other courses of instruction, conduct such research and offer such public services as are prescribed by the Board of Governors of State Colleges and Universities or its successor."

In January 1996, Northeastern Illinois University established its own Board of Trustees.

The Northeastern Illinois University Board of Trustees named Dr. Sharon K. Hahs as President of NEIU effective February 1, 2007.

No, It's strictly a commuter campus. However, there are apartments in the area and roommate matching services. Try the following links: http://www.zipapartments.com/ http://www.gooffcampus.com/

Hard work, not a pretty diploma, will earn you the money that you seem to be so concerned about making. Life is more than that man, but I understand that you are young and I understand the pressure on you. Graduating from a university that isn't the best in the world will hopefully give you a little of the proverbial "fire in belly." Too many ivy league graduates rest on their laurels and the institution on their diploma. You're getting essentially the same education, you just aren't getting sunshine and good feelings blown up your rear end every day. That's all they are really getting. Make your own opportunities, don't have them handed to you and you will feel far more accomplished and fulfilled in life. Good luck.
Im looking at colleges right now and I am wondering if it is or not. Im thinking about doing a double major: Psychology and Sociology. Wouldn't only take 4 years?

For Elementary Education, then it is a good school. Some of the private schools in Chicago (National Louis - Roosevelt - and DePaul come to mind) may have a better reputation, but you really need to think about the extra cost of tuition. Elementary Ed teachers don't make a lot of money, so paying back private school tuition could be a burden (if you don't get financial aid). If you plan to stay in the Chicago area, at least for a couple years, this is fine. They are familiar with the school, and the state of Illinois will give you certification to be a teacher when you are done. If you are just not happy with the campus, then you might want to consider UIC - but really, it's not necessary if you are already at NeIU and taking advantage of the opportunities the school presents.

It depends on how you organize your schedule. In college, the student is in charge of making their class schedule. For example, I organized my schedule for next semester so that I have no classes before 9:30, after 4:00 or on Fridays.
I want to major in secondary education and minor in sociology.. thanks in advance. thanks so much for the help sorry about not making my question clear. i am in state, i will be a transfer full time student, and i have my own place already.

Tuition varies depending on whether you are an in state student or an out of state student. It varies depending on whether you are a full time or a part time student. It varies depending on your student level. There are several other variables, so your question is impossible to answer without information.
