School Description
Provided by Saint Elizabeth College of NursingSt. Elizabeth College of Nursing (SECON) was established in 1904 as a single purpose three-year diploma program in nursing. It was registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing and graduated its first class of seven in 1907. The nursing program was a natural outgrowth of the tradition and mission of St. Elizabeth Medical Center (SEMC) which is to care for the sick and helpless. The College maintains a strong tie with its parent institution, SEMC, as well as other clinical agencies to provide superior clinical experiences for students in all clinical areas.
The College now offers a two-year associate in applied science (AAS) degree in nursing, fully integrating theoretical learning with clinical experiences within a caring environment. The nursing courses include direct patient care that is planned and supervised by a faculty member with expertise in a particular nursing area. One of the strengths of the program at St. Elizabeth is its clinical component that combines the theory learned in class with actual nursing practice allowing for immediate transfer and application of knowledge. SECON also offers an evening/weekend nursing program in addition to the weekday program. It is designed to meet the needs of the adult learner who is unable to attend classes during the weekday hours.
St. Elizabeth College of Nursing celebrated its one-hundredth year of operation in 2004 and has graduated over 3000 men and women who provide professional and high quality care to clients of all ages. The College continues to respond to ongoing changes in health care and remains a leader in nursing education in the Mohawk Valley.
The College of Nursing complex was completed in 1969. The educational building and St. Elizabeth Medical Center (SEMC) offices are connected on the ground floor level by a two-story entrance lobby. The teaching center contains faculty offices, classrooms, nursing skills learning resource center, science and computer laboratories, a modernly equipped audio-visual center and library, and a large auditorium-style room.
St. Elizabeth College of Nursing (SECON) is located in Utica, New York, a city of approximately 60,000. Situated at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, the area is commonly known as the Mohawk Valley. The College is approximately 50 miles east of Syracuse and 94 miles west of Albany, New York, in the Interstate 90 corridor. Utica is located in Oneida County, which has a population of approximately 300,000. The Mohawk Valley is both rural and urban, with agricultural and dairy businesses and industrialized urban centers.
