Rutgers University - Camden School Description

Prestige, opportunity, tradition, and value characterize every aspect of the Rutgers–Camden experience. Located at the foot of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, just across the Delaware River from historic Philadelphia, Rutgers–Camden is at the very heart of the Delaware Valley. In fact, Rutgers is the college campus closest to the Liberty Bell.

As the southernmost of the three regional campuses that comprise Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Rutgers–Camden delivers all the resources of one of America's most prestigious public research universities, with all the benefits of a supportive small-college experience that's close to home and the workplace. Students enrolled at Rutgers–Camden are immersed in the rich academic tradition of Rutgers, one of America's first public universities with a heritage that predates the founding of the United States.

Rutgers–Camden is recognized the world over for its rigorous standards in faculty excellence and reputable academic programs that prepare all of its graduates for successful careers in the fields of their choice. Faculty are regarded as leaders and innovators in their disciplines, and conduct research that defines the next generation of knowledge. They publish research in top scientific, academic, and professional peer-reviewed journals; publish books with the most prominent publishing houses; command honors from around the world; and secure highly competitive research grants and support.

As the sole comprehensive public research university in the state's system of higher education, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has the threefold mission of:

* providing for the instructional needs of New Jersey's citizens through its undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs;

* conducting the cutting-edge research that contributes to the medical, environmental, social and cultural well-being of the state, as well as aiding the economy and the state’s businesses and industries; and

* performing public service in support of the needs of the citizens of the state and its local, county, and state governments.

Each component of the university's mission reinforces and supports the other two. For example, research creates the new knowledge so necessary to support quality instruction and innovative public service. The mission of the university is accomplished through its three regional campuses (Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick/Piscataway) and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, which complement and support each other, permitting the most effective use of state resources.

The small scale of the campus makes it possible for undergraduates to study with highly respected faculty from the time they arrive on campus. Student research, experiential learning, and international studies are hallmarks of the undergraduate experience.

Creative teaching is valued at every level, and delivers real outcomes for our students, as evidenced by the ever-increasing presence of Rutgers–Camden graduates at the highest levels of state and national government; strong placement rates in graduate and doctoral programs; career placements with top employers; and the professional and personal successes of alumni.

The roots of Rutgers University-Camden date back to 1926, when Colligswood businessman and Mayor Arthur E. Armitage Sr. and a group of interested citizens established the South Jersey Law School. Classes were first held in Ayer Mansion, the current home of Admissions. Soon the school began constructing buildings of its own. The following year, the College of South Jersey, a two-year undergraduate institution was founded. In 1950, the combined schools became the Camden Campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Question: How does admission into Rutgers University work?

Does Rutgers University account for weighted high school GPA or unweighted high school GPA during admissions? Plus, I'm only involved in volunteer services and no extracurriculars. I have (and never have had) any leadership experiences nor have I contributed/done anything significant in my life. So, do I stand a chance of getting into Rutgers University? P.S. I'm aiming for New Brunswick. Would applying to RU at New Brunswick be different from applying to Camden or Newark?

I just got accepted into Rutgers New Brunswick and I'm going there for sure. I got in with a 3.3 weighted GPA (3.0 unweighted) and i have community service, i was on the highschool tennis team for all 4 years, and i have completed the highest level of the ceritificate of merit for piano. 1980 on SAT and 770 on SAT II Math and 650 SAT II U.S. history. i'm from california so i'm not in NJ state, so it was much harder for me to get in since state students have priority. my friend from new jersey has no community service and no extracurriculars with a 2.0 gpa w/ 1600 on SAT got in to Brunswick too though, so yeah if you're in new jersey, you'll definitely get in. If you're from out of state, it might be a little tougher but give it a shot still. Newark and Camden are a lot easier to get into than Brunswick

Question: Should I go to Rutgers University in Camden?

So, I have been debating on whether or not I should go to Rutgers in Camden. The only problem is that Camden has been known for its bad crime rate and ghetto neighborhoods. Is it really as bad as people say it is? Advice from those who have gone to Rutgers in Camden are appreciated. Thank you.

Okay so first of all before you go to any college you should always visit first. and if youre from a rich neighborhood then it will be a shock. Visit first because the brochures ALWAYS look nice

I'm partial to Rutgers being from NJ - but RU has a great academic reputation. Their main campus is in New Brunswick, but they also have sites in Camden and Newark. I'm just going to lay this out there - Camden is a tough city. On the upside, if you look at rankings, Camden is actually out-scoring the other Rutgers campuses. RU! rah! rah! <3 Jersey love
