University of Phoenix provides access to higher education opportunities that enable students to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve their professional goals, improve the productivity of their organizations, and provide leadership and service to their communities.
The University aims to facilitate cognitive and affective student learning--knowledge, skills, and values -- and to promote use of that knowledge in the student's work place. We develop competence in communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and information utilization, together with a commitment to lifelong learning for enhancement of students' opportunities for career success. Our instruction bridges the gap between theory and practice through faculty members who bring to their classroom not only advanced academic preparation, but also the skills that come from the current practice of their professions.
Ultimately, the University strives to be organized to foster a spirit of innovation that focuses on providing academic quality, service, excellence, and convenience to the working adult.
The University of Phoenix (UPX) is a for-profit educational institution that specializes in adult education. The largest private university in North America, it has an enrollment of more than 345,300 students. The school was founded in 1976 by Dr. John Sperling and is owned by the Apollo Group, Inc. The university has more than 200 campuses offering more than 100 degree programs at the associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels in various fields of study.
In the early 1970s, at San Jose State University in California, John Sperling and several associates conducted field-based research in adult education. The focus of the research was to explore teaching/learning systems for the delivery of educational programs and services to working adult students who wished to complete or further their education in ways that complemented both their experience and current professional responsibilities. At that time, colleges and universities were organized primarily around serving the needs of the 18–22-year-old undergraduate student — given that the large majority of those enrolled were residential students of traditional college age, just out of high school. “According to Sperling, working adult students were often invisible on traditional campuses and treated as second-class citizens.”
With a first class of only eight students, Sperling founded the university in 1976 in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1980, the school expanded to San Jose, California. By 1989, the university had become one of the first providing an online program for students.
University of Phoenix is a wholly owned subsidiary of Apollo Group, Inc. publicly traded on and is a S&P 500 corporation based in Phoenix, Arizona. The school was the top recipient of federal assistance for the 2008 fiscal year, receiving over $2.8 billion in federal money to fund student financial aid programs. The University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona is a municipal sports arena, best known as the home of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals and the site of the NCAA's Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The University paid $154.5 million for 20 year naming rights for advertising purposes.

College Advice on University of Phoenix - Raleigh |
Question: Have you graduated from University of Phoenix? What was your experience from the education perspective? ?I will also have no choice but to have financial aid. Currently I have Stafford Loans. How easy/complicated is it to obtain financial aid through Phoenix University?14 months ago
Best AnswerU of Phoenix is regionally accredited, so you will be able to apply for and use student loans there, no problem. You fill out the FAFSA to find out what aid you qualify for, and U of P will help you through the process. U of P is a lower level university. It's no Harvard, in other words. But it's a real university, and is appropriately accredited. They are real classes, with real teachers. U of P actually has a MySpace page now. There are forums there where you can ask questions of students and etc. You may be interested, so I'll link you: http://www.myspace.com/universityofphoenix |
Question: Have you benefitted from a University of Phoenix degree? Would you recommend the university to others? ?I am curious as to how others perceive the University of Phoenix. If you have received a degree from this university, have you benefited from your degree and would you recommend it to others who may be interested in a degree from the university?17 months ago
Best AnswerI earned my bachelor degree in business from UOP and am currently enrolled in their MBA program. Earning my degree from UOP was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have been promoted as a result of having a bachelors degree and have almost doubled my salary. I picked UOP because my work schedule made going to a traditional university impossible. UOP is accredited by the north central association of schools and colleges of the higher learning commission. This is the same accreditation as Notre Dame, Northwestern, and Purdue (to name a few). Many companies encourage, and pay for, their employees to attend UOP. Boeing has a partnership with UOP and a large number of their employees are students and graduates of UOP. Anyone that tells you UOP is a poor choice is simply misinformed. |
Question: Does anyone know if credits from Phoenix University transfer to other 4-yr Universities?I want to attend Phoenix University because of the flexibility in its internet courses, but I also want to transfer after a year to a 4-yr university. Does anyone know if those credits will transfer or if Phoenix University is like one of those independent places that is not affiliated with any other schools? Thanks.24 months ago
Best AnswerThey do transfer and they ARE accredited. UoP is accredited by the same accreditation as many traditional colleges and universities in the west. Like any college or university, you will lose some credits. That is the nature of the game. You could transfer from Harvard to any other college and still lose credits. Your best bet is to contact the school you are interested in transferring to and see which credits they will take and which they will not. |
