Indiana University of Pennsylvania - Main Campus

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Indiana University of Pennsylvania (or IUP) is a public university located in the borough of Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA, northeast of Pittsburgh. It is the largest university in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PaSSHE) and is the commonwealth's fifth largest university. It is governed by a local Council of Trustees and the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. IUP has branch campuses at Punxsutawney, Northpointe, and Monroeville.

History

IUP was conceived as Indiana Normal School, first chartered in 1871 by Indiana County investors. The school was created under the Normal School Act, which passed the Pennsylvania General Assembly on 20 May 1857. Normal schools established under the act were to be private corporations in no way dependent upon the state treasury. They were to be "state" normal schools only in the sense of being officially recognized by the commonwealth.

The school opened its doors in 1875 following the mold of the French Ecole Normale. When it opened its doors it enrolled just 225 students. All normal school events were held within a single building which also contained a laboratory school for model teaching. In 1927 it became Indiana State College. In 1965, the institution achieved university status and became Indiana University of Pennsylvania, or IUP.

IUP maintains a total enrollment of over 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students making it the largest school in the system and the only one elevated to doctoral granting status in PaSSHE's enabling legislation Pennsylvania Act 188 of 1982. Today IUP is classified as a Carnegie Doctoral/Research-Intensive university and is accredited by Middle States Association of Colleges and Universities, NCATE, and AACSB.

Colleges

IUP offers over 100 undergraduate degree programs and 40 graduate degree programs under the direction of 7 colleges/schools. The university awards the: A.A., B.A., B.S., B.S.Ed., B.F.A., M.A., M.S., M.Ed., M.F.A., Ed.D., Psy.D., and Ph.D. The highest non-degree award presented by IUP is the President's Medal of Distinction. A Pharm.D. is currently in the planning stages.

There nursing program is supposedly the best in the state. But, I'm going for fashion merchandising, so I wouldn't know first hand. It's very selective though.

I have tons of friends who go there! The middle portion of my graduating class went there (size: 520), it is a great party school and the town itself is a pretty nice place. The people who go there are all from Pittsburgh or surrounding areas. It is an ok school, most of my high school teachers and coaches went there.

Question: I want to be an english teacher. I am looking at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Is it a good school?

I am also looking at schools in Oregon and Virginia because I have residency in both of those states. I would prefer an east coast school over a west coast one (my family is in Virginia and Pennsylvania.) IUP is affordable even to someone out-of-state, and I have heard good things about their english education degree program but I am not sure what to believe and would prefer information from people who go or have gone there. Any opinions or real info on IUP or schools in Virginia?

Hi there, I go to IUP an I am a sophomore. I live right outside of Philadelphia an I love IUP so far. The school has just about the perfect amount of students, and the teachers are all respectable to the students. I would highly reccomend it, an as well IUP is looking to move to D-1 in the near future which will mean better salaries for teachers as well. Right now they are building all new dorms, and looking to reach over 20,000 students very soon. New buildings are also being built as we speak. I hope you come visit so you can see this massive renovation. Good LUCK!
