In 1952 the school was renamed the Lewis College of Science and Technology. In 1960, the De La Salle Christian Brothers - members of a 326-year-old religious order devoted exclusively to teaching and named after Saint John Baptist de La Salle, their founder and Patron Saint of Educators - assumed direction of the institution. Today, with growing enrollment, outstanding programs, experienced faculty and motivated students, Lewis University is recognized as one of the finest, mid-sized, comprehensive Catholic universities in the country.

Lewis University was founded in 1932 by the Chicago Archdiocese and Bishop Bernard J. Sheil as the Holy Name Technical School. The school gets its name from philanthropist Frank J. Lewis who funded the construction of many of the school's buildings. In 1934 it was renamed the Lewis Holy Name Technical School. The next year its name changed yet again to the Lewis Holy Name School of Aeronautics. In 1940, the name of the school changed to the Lewis School of Aeronautics. During World War II, normal classes were suspended as the campus was given to the United States Navy to train pilots. Regular classes resumed in late 1944 and the college soon adopted a more traditional arts and science curriculum. Women were admitted for the first time in 1949. Three years later the school's name was changed to the Lewis College of Science and Technology. The school's name was shortened to simply Lewis College in 1962 and finally received its current name of Lewis University in 1973.
In 2004 and 2005, Lewis enrolled more than 5,000 total students. Lewis’ strengths as an institution of higher learning have been evidenced through various sources. The University has been cited as one of the best colleges in the region for the last two consecutive years by both The Princeton Review and U.S. News and World Report. The University is included in the top tier of U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of the best Midwest master’s-level universities, most recently placing 58 out of a total of 144 institutions. College Advice on Lewis University - Romeoville |
Question: Was there a fire on the Lewis University campus in Romeoville IL in the Phillip Lynch Theater? In the theater there are fire scarred bricks but we haven't been able to find any information whatsoever about a fire in the building. There is also a door that leads to the roof that has Do Not Open scratched into it where we found some unprocessed cotton, while the climate around here is not suitable for cotton to grow, as well as the fact that there is not a farm within 40 miles of the campus. I'm pretty sure it happend before it became the Theater the bricks look quite old but so far no information.41 months ago
Best AnswerThat is interesting, but I have never heard that there was a fire in the theater. The only thing I know about the building is that it used to be an old airplane hanger...I'll ask around and see if anything comes up though! In 1895 there was a massive fire in downtown Lockport, and if you said the bricks appear to be really old, then I would say it is likely that they came from the fire. |
