Saint Vincent College School Description

Saint Vincent College is an educational community rooted in the tradition of the Catholic faith, the heritage of Benedictine monasticism, and the love of values inherent in the liberal approach to life and learning. Its mission is to provide quality undergraduate and graduate education for men and women to enable them to integrate their professional aims with the broader purposes of human life. The programs, activities, and encounters that make up student life at Saint Vincent College encourage the intellectual gifts, professional aptitudes and personal aspirations of students to mature harmoniously.

Saint Vincent College is an educational community rooted in the tradition of the Catholic faith, the heritage of Benedictine monasticism, and the love of values inherent in the liberal approach to life and learning.

The Core Curriculum presents all students with a broadly based education that provides a general body of knowledge in the humanities and fine arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics, an interdisciplinary view of that knowledge base, and the skills to increase that general body of knowledge throughout their lives.

Saint Vincent is organized into four schools; each includes a number of departments and major and minor programs, as well as special programs and public service outreach activities. Each school has its own Dean who works closely with students, faculty and prospective students. Undeclared majors will eventually choose a major that fits into one of the four schools.

Nearby are some notable historical sites and destinations of cultural significance such as Frank Lloyd Wright's famous "Falling Water." The Palace Theater in Greensburg is a local venue for the performing arts, including a regional symphony orchestra. We also have our own Saint Vincent Theatre that generally produces three shows per summer season. The Westmoreland Mall on the eastern side of Greensburg is a major regional shopping mall. Those few things you can't find in the Latrobe-Greensburg area will surely be in Pittsburgh - only 40 miles away. Among other Pittsburgh attractions, you'll find some outstanding museums, fabulous performing arts - including the world-class Pittsburgh Symphony, and a fascinating set of neighborhoods to explore. Pittsburgh has a great sports tradition and the pro teams are a pride of the region. Saint Vincent College

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Saint Vincent College is a four-year, coeducational, Roman Catholic, liberal arts Benedictine college in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, located forty miles southeast of Pittsburgh. It was founded in 1846 by Boniface Wimmer, a monk from Bavaria, Germany. It was the first Benedictine monastery in the United States. It is sponsored by the Benedictine Monks of Saint Vincent Archabbey. Formerly a men's college, Saint Vincent became coeducational in 1983.

History

Founded in 1846 by Boniface Wimmer as a men's college, Saint Vincent began admitting women in 1983. Now, the number of female students is slightly higher than the number of male students.

In 2004, the college hired a professional lobbyist who successfully lobbied Representative John P. Murtha into awarding $4 million through an addition to a federal appropriation bill. The money was used to improve the safety and appearance the school's entrance road stemming from US Route 30.

The college also hosts the Pittsburgh Steelers football team's summer camp.

In the Fall of 2007, the Saint Vincent College Bearcats resumed their varsity football program in the Presidents' Athletic Conference after a 44 year hiatus. The team ended the 2007 season with a 0-10 record.

In May 2007, President George W. Bush delivered the commencement address. Presidents Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy have spoken at the college as well.

Traditions

Each year, on the Thursday before Thanksgiving, the Saint Vincent Community celebrates Founders Day, honoring all those who founded the college and have been a part of its community since its inception. The day features Honors Convocation (held in the Archabbey Basilica), a candle-lit turkey dinner in the gym, Zambelli fireworks and the campus light-up, featuring lighted arches in Melvin Platz.

The college took a page from Duke University's Cameron Crazies in creating the Carey Crazies, the student fans at home basketball games (located in the Robert S. Carey Student Center). In addition, the Carey Crazies have a tradition of standing up, turning around and reading a page from the newspaper while the visiting team is announced and takes the court.
