Bryn Athyn College of the New Church
From Wikipedia, The Free EncyclopediaBryn Athyn College is a small, private Christian liberal arts college located 20 miles northeast of Philadelphia in the borough of Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania, a National Historic Landmark District. Bryn Athyn is affiliated with the General Church of the New Jerusalem, also known as the New Church, offering bachelors degree programs that provide students with a positive, life-shaping, hands-on education. Close student-faculty relationships are the cornerstone of the College’s tradition of personalized learning. Its low faculty-to-student ratio, diverse student body, large endowment, emphasis on experiential learning, and distinctive religious perspective make this college unique.
History
Bryn Athyn College has been educating undergraduates for more than 100 years, since its incorporation under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1877. Then known as the Academy of the New Church, its original purpose was to train ministers, like most institutions of higher learning in those days. In 1890 the Academy established a separate organization: the General Church of the New Jerusalem, a religious body based on the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg. The General Church of the New Jerusalem is now a world-wide organization and continues to promote public worship in the light of Swedenborg’s teachings. Originating as a seminary, endowments from John Pitcairn enabled the Academy of the New Church to very quickly expanded into a high school and a two-year college. In 1914 it became a four-year college and by 1922 the College was conferring both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. In 1997, the Academy of the New Church College adopted a new name: Bryn Athyn College. Today, while remaining grounded in the tenets of the New Church and the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg, the College is growing. In August 2008 the College opened several new student residence cottages, and broke ground for a new science center and a new admissions pavilion—to be completed in September 2009.
