South Dakota State University

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

South Dakota State University is the largest university in the U.S. state of South Dakota, located in Brookings. A public land-grant university and sun grant college, founded under the provisions of the 1862 Morrill Act, SDSU offers programs of study required by, or harmonious to, this Act. In step with this land-grant heritage and mission, SDSU has a special focus on academic programs in agriculture, engineering, nursing, and pharmacy, as well as the liberal arts. SDSU is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents, which governs the state's six public universities and two special schools.

History

The university was founded on February 21, 1881 as Dakota Agriculture College. The first building, with funding from the territorial legislature, was built in 1883, six years before the State of South Dakota was incorporated. Numerous expansions were funded in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The name was changed in 1904 to South Dakota State College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts. In 1964, the name was changed to South Dakota State University, reflecting the more comprehensive education offered at the university.

In 1923, SDSU's instructional program was organized under five divisions: Agriculture, Engineering, General Science, Home Economics, and Pharmacy. In 1956, a Nursing program was established, and in 1957 a formal graduate school was formed. When the University changed its name in 1964, the colleges were renamed Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Home Economics, Nursing, Pharmacy, and the Graduate School. In 1974, the College of General Registration (now the College of General Studies) was formed. In 1975, the Division of Education was created. An Honors College was formed in 1999. The current names of these colleges are; Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Education and Counseling, Engineering, Family and Consumer Sciences, General Studies, Nursing, Pharmacy, and the Graduate and Honors Colleges.

Yes.... Brookings, SD I have a ton of friends that go to school there!

Question: University of South Dakota, or South Dakota State University?

Ok so with the financial crisis I may not be able to afford going to the University of Kansas (out of state tuition sucks), and am being forced to consider two closer options, the University of South Dakota, and South Dakota State University. My major is going to be journalism, and I was wondering which of those two schools have better reputations? Obviously I would go to grad school, most likely at the University of Minnesota to make up for not going to the greatest school for my four year, but any input on these two schools would be great!

I'm originally from MN so I'm pretty familiar with SD colleges, although I did not attend one myself. I do not know much about USD, but I will say that I had a lot of friends that went to SDSU and they all loved their time there. I think SDSU is probably a little more well-known that USD, but neither is nationally known, if that's what you're asking. There are also several schools in MN, NE, and ND where you could get reciprocity tuition and pay the same as in-state students if you aren't liking the idea of going to college in SD. My best advice is to tour both schools and see where you feel more comfortable.

Question: SDSU-South Dakota State?

What are the advantages of attending South Dakota State University? I don't want disadvantages, or negative stuff, please. Just reasons why you should go there.

It's a great school to attend in my opinion. It's not huge, and it's not po-dunk either. The town maybe is a little boring, but it's low crime. The cost is cheap, and the education is good for the price. If you're going for AgBio, even better, some majors have national reputation for excellence. They always have some kind of activity to go to, and I always end up having fun at them. You'll see so many cowboys you'll think you've been somehow teleported to the Old West, but they're all very friendly and helpful people and always willing to lend a hand. For a relatively small school, there's quite a big deal of diversity on campus. If you have any more questions just PM me.
