Elizabethtown College - Elizabethtown

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Elizabethtown College is a small comprehensive college located in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania in Lancaster County. The school was founded in 1899 by members of the Church of the Brethren. It is commonly referred to as "E-town."

History

Founded in 1899, Elizabethtown College is a 'centennial college', one of dozens of institutions of higher learning founded in the 19th century by churches or church members interested in the educational advancement of their denominational membership. Elizabethtown College was founded by the Reverend Jacob G. Francis and members of the Church of the Brethren. During its first two decades, Elizabethtown College functioned as a college and as an academy for high school students to bolster its teacher training program. In 1921, the College became accredited by the State Council on Education, and bestowed its first baccalaureate degree. The success during the 1920s was soon replaced by the hardships of the 1930s. Despite calls to close down the facility, the spirit of perseverance at the College carried it through those trying times. After World War II, Elizabethtown College again saw prosperity, and became accredited by the Middle States Association in 1948 and the American Council of Education in 1949.

Question: Elizabethtown College Experiences?

What kind of experiences do people have at college specifically Elizabethtown FRESHMEN??? And is there a difference between freshmen dorms and senior dorms???

The experience I had as a freshman was really good - and that's sayings something considering that I was a transfer student, which made it a bit tougher to establish relationships. There is a first year Seminar program designed to get you involved with your major and one of its heads. If you're undecided, you might luck out and get the greatest adviser/professor ever - Carole Isaak (I had her). You will be assigned peer mentors who will make sure that your experience at Etown is a good one. Everyone else that I know really likes it here. Comparatively, Etown is small, which means that everyone knows everyone - both in the good ways and in the bad. So just be mindful of your conduct. As far as dorms go, freshman are housed in traditional dormitories (Ober, Royer, Founders, maybe Brinser if you're lucky - don't count on it, possibly Schlosser if you're female) all of the buildings are co-ed except for Schlosser. This means you'll have one roommate and communal bathrooms. Founders probably has the best bathrooms since they're small, numerous, and you won't encounter too many people, generally. Sophomores up have the option of picking their roommate and living in traditional housing with the option to apply for singles and the male block housing in Myer (there is only one floor of male residents on Myer, since it is only going co-ed for the first time this year). Juniors and Seniors have the option of applying for the Vera Hackman Apartments, the Schreiber Quadrangle, or a Brinser Suite. Basically, they gather a group of four and can apply to live in an independent-style living unit. The apartments and suites are apartment based housing, while the Quads are townhouses. There is one exception that I can think of, which is Japan house in the Quads, where 2nd year up Japanese students will be able to live in the Quads with Japanese students for an immersive language experience. Hope this helps. I'm probably a little biased towards Founders since I RA there, though.
