Frankfort, the capital city of Kentucky and the home of Kentucky State University, lies on the western edge of the state's Bluegrass region. The city of 30,000, which is more than 200 years old, grew along the banks of the Kentucky River in a small valley bordered by limestone cliffs. Preservation of historic structures throughout the city adds to its picturesque quality. Easily accessible by major highways, Frankfort is within a short drive of Lexington, Louisville and Cincinnati.

Kentucky State University

Kentucky State University (KSU, or less commonly, KYSU, to differentiate from Kansas State University) is a four-year institution of higher learning, located in Frankfort, Kentucky, the Commonwealth's capital. The school is an historically black university, which desegregated in 1954. It is also an 1890 Land Grant university which serves the citizens of Kentucky through its cooperative extension program. More than half of the student body is African-American today. It is listed as "A Best Southeastern College" by the Princeton Review and as a U.S. News and World Report "America's Best Colleges 2007." The current university president is Dr. Mary Evans Sias.

History

The school was chartered in 1886 and opened in 1887 as the State Normal School for Colored Persons. In 1890, the U.S. Government made the school a land grant institution. In 1902, the name of the school was changed to the Kentucky Normal and Industrial Institute for Colored Persons, which was changed again in 1926 to the Kentucky State Industrial College for Colored Persons. In 1938, the school became known as the Kentucky State College for Negroes (the "for Negroes" was dropped in 1952). The college became a full-fledged university in 1972. In 1973, Kentucky State offered its first graduate programs.

An adjoining high school was in operation from the late 1890s until the early 1930s.

Question: what is going to Kentucky state University like?

I am a junior and i want to pick a college that I can learn from and also party and have fun as well. Also does Kentucky State have good programs for psychology and fashion merchandising/marketing?

Studying needs to be your priority. Look into the quality of these programs. For instance their nursing program is not thought highly of. In addition to looking for student opinions here, also talk to recruiters/employers before you register. Do they require you to attend a certain type of school? Does you school need to be accredited? By any specific bodies? Use this information when you are looking at any school, not just Kentucky State.

Question: What can i do, to get into Kentucky State University?

from freshman year to junior year hasn't been so great, i haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet (but i plan on taking it in the fall) and i plan on playing basketball and track and field next year for senior year, so would that help? And i would like to know when is the best time to send in an application?, i plan on going to the campus in the fall.

go ahead and start applying, or talk to your guidance counselor....thats what they are there for! Just do your best to keep your grades up, study and work hard. Get involved in community activities...church, habitat for humanity, animal shelters...etc. Those things look great on applications because it shows you are well rounded. Sports are good too...keep that up. But most importantly...keep your grades up. Good luck!
