Provided by Dakota State University

The primary purpose of Dakota StateUniversity at Madison in Lake County is to provide instruction incomputer management, computer information systems, electronic dataprocessing and other related undergraduate and graduate programs. The secondary purpose is to offer two-year, one-year and short courses for application and operator training in the areas authorized by this section. This authorization includes the preparation of elementary andsecondary teachers with emphasis in computer and information processing. Except for degree programs in existence during the 1983-84 academic year, the unique baccalaureate programs authorized for Dakota StateUniversity shall not be duplicated by the Board of Regents. Section 3. The Board of Regents shall continue to provide existingcourses for those students enrolled at Dakota State University during the spring semester of 1984 in order to allow those students presently enrolled to complete their scheduled program of study. Section 4. The medical record program and respiratory therapy programcurrently in existence at Dakota State University shall remain at Dakota State University unless otherwise transferred by the Board of Regents.

Degrees are authorized at the associate, baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels. The following curriculum is approved for the university:

1. Undergraduate Programs
1. Associate degree programs are approved in allied health care, business, general studies, and information technology. Baccalaureate programs are approved in allied health care, business, education, information technology, mathematics, and sciences.
2. Graduate Programs
1. Masters degree programs are approved in education and information technology.
2. A Doctor of Science degree in Information Systems is approved.

Dakota State University is a public, four-year university, located in Madison, South Dakota. The university has a focus on programs in computers, business, education, physical sciences, among other graduate and undergraduate programs. The university requires all full-time undergraduate students to use tablet PCs in general education courses. It is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents.

Dakota State University is considered to be one of the more technologically advanced post-secondary institutions, making use of advanced biometric identification devices and special computer laboratories designed for computer hacking. Tablet PCs are made use of in all general education courses as well as many major-specific courses. All students take a computer usage course and an introductory programming course as part of their curriculum.

It is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and in 2004 was designated by the National Security Agency as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education.

DSU is home to the Smith-Zimmermann Heritage Museum and the Karl E. Mundt Library and Archives. Its athletic mascot is the Trojan and it is a member of the Dakota Athletic Conference. Its current president is Dr. Douglas D. Knowlton. As of the Fall 2008 semester, its total student enrollment was 2,780, of whom 53% were women, and its total faculty count was 91, of whom 34% were women.

Question: University of South Dakota, or South Dakota State University?

Ok so with the financial crisis I may not be able to afford going to the University of Kansas (out of state tuition sucks), and am being forced to consider two closer options, the University of South Dakota, and South Dakota State University. My major is going to be journalism, and I was wondering which of those two schools have better reputations? Obviously I would go to grad school, most likely at the University of Minnesota to make up for not going to the greatest school for my four year, but any input on these two schools would be great!

I'm originally from MN so I'm pretty familiar with SD colleges, although I did not attend one myself. I do not know much about USD, but I will say that I had a lot of friends that went to SDSU and they all loved their time there. I think SDSU is probably a little more well-known that USD, but neither is nationally known, if that's what you're asking. There are also several schools in MN, NE, and ND where you could get reciprocity tuition and pay the same as in-state students if you aren't liking the idea of going to college in SD. My best advice is to tour both schools and see where you feel more comfortable.
