School Description
Provided by Thomas More College of Liberal ArtsThe education at the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts is conceived as being not so much the acquisition of information or the aggregation of skills as it is a gradual transformation in which students of a wide range of abilities come to understand the major ideas and modes of thought of our civilization. They are taught to examine situations and make judgments, and to proceed to original thinking, which they are able to express clearly and felicitously - both in speaking and in writing. Education at the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts is not a matter of classroom hours only but of community: daily conversations and activities are welded together with ideas and thought. Students as well as faculty members contribute to the teaching and learning process, which is dependent on the formation of harmonious friendship among all participants in the life of the college.
The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts is dedicated to providing a Catholic education to students of all faiths. It recognizes that reflection on the specific nature of liberal education has been entrusted to the Church in a special way and so assumes as its task the rediscovery and articulation of this tradition in our own time.

Mission
In May 1993, the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars requested from the presidents of Catholic colleges a statement addressing the question: "What is a Catholic college?" Dr. Sampo's response provides a useful introduction to the founding vision of Thomas More. In it, he explains the college's commitment to providing the opportunity of receiving liberal arts education to all eager learners, not only those with the highest standardized test scores or most advantageous backgrounds. He roots this commitment in the college's identity as a Catholic school, saying that a recognition of the equality of all persons is part of the truth revealed by Christ, and, as such, ought to play a role in a Christian educational enterprise.
Curriculum
Core curriculum
The core curriculum at Thomas More College is similar to a Great Books program. Students read the great works of Western literature, philosophy, and political science in their entirety rather than as a collection of excerpts. The course of study takes the form of a Humanities Cycle, in which all the students - freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors - engage the same works at the same time. Further detail is available on Thomas More's curriculum page
Alumni of Thomas More speak highly of the way the unique Humanities cycle core curriculum at Thomas More fosters discussion and cooperation among the entire student body. Comments can be read on Thomas More's mission and purpose page.
