Savannah State University School Description

Chartered by the State of Georgia in 1890, as a department of the State University for the education and training of Negro students, Savannah State University now serves a diverse student population as a senior university of the University System of Georgia. The University serves a primarily African-American student population, enriched by a diversity of traditional and nontraditional students from other countries, cultures, and races.

The University's mission is to graduate students prepared to perform at higher levels of economic productivity, social responsibility, and excellence in their chosen fields of endeavor in a changing global community. The educational goal is realized through program offerings in the College of Business Administration, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and the College of Sciences and Technology, which lead to baccalaureate, and master's degrees.

The 173-acre campus is by far the most picturesque in the state of Georgia. The moss-laden sweeping oak trees, expansive marsh and historic architecture create a resplendent yet tranquil atmosphere. Beneath the beauty and splendor is a vibrant residential campus bursting at the seams with the vim and vigor of quality collegiate life: relevant academic majors, engaging lectures, cutting-edge research, quality student-faculty engagement and a nurturing environment.

It really depends on your preference. SSU is a HBC which means that it is a Historical Black College. Both of my parents attended SSU and they say that the school has really improved and upgraded. When they went there, they told me that it was just a party school, in a sense it still is, but the education has improved drastically. Savannah State does have a small campus, but there are various on-campus activities to get into, and Savannah is a beautiful city, with great night life. For 116 years, Savannah State University has been an important part of higher education. As the oldest public HBCU in Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in the historic city of Savannah, SSU has served this community with distinction while meeting the educational needs of an increasingly diverse student population. I invite you to become a part of the SSU family. Please continue your exploration of Savannah State University - both on the Web and in person – and share our excitement. The University offers a comprehensive array of organized and informal co-curricular activities including 75 student organizations, leadership workshops, 15 intramural activities, student publications and student internships. Student organizations and leadership workshops increase student involvement in campus governance, help students develop a greater understanding of the link between leadership and co-curricular activities on campus, help students become more purposeful in their academic pursuits, and apply institutional values of honesty, civility and respect for freedom of thought and expression. SSU offers a full range of recreational activities and facilities for students, faculty and staff including two gymnasiums, a pool, outdoor tennis courts, soccer fields, basketball courts, and a fitness center with state-of-the-art exercise equipment.

They are both good but I think Savannah is a way cool place!

Question: In your opinion, which college is better (as far as education, housing, and extracurricular activities go)?

FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY, ALBANY STATE UNIVERSITY, OR SAVANNAH STATE UNIVERSITY?

I don't think anyone on here can answer your question from experience. Go to each of their websites and find a link that says 'future students' or the equivalent. There should be something like a 'campus life' link. There should be a housing section as well. Most college's sites are big, so just look around. As for education, you really can't say one of those colleges is better than the other. One might have more 'prestige' though (I don't know of these colleges). One may look better on future resumes. More importantly, do you know what your major is? Say it's psychology. Albany may have a better program than Savanna (or vise versa). Do a search on Yahoo/Google -- "best (your major) programs". Look for student/faculty ratio in the website. Smaller classes mean more chance to network. Look for graduation rates (if 1/2 of entering freshman don't graduate, don't go!). Furthermore, make appointments to visit the colleges. No sense of picking a college before you even visit. You may even have a chance to explore dorms if you visit in the summer.
