The institution was originally founded in 1899 as Draughon's Practical Business College by John Draughon,. It operated under the name Draughon's Junior College until 1985, when the name South College was adopted to reflect its acquisition (in 1974) by the family of John T. South, III. The name was later changed to South University to reflect the institution's accreditation to award degrees at the masters and doctorate level.
South University has satellite campuses in Columbia, South Carolina; Montgomery, Alabama; Savannah, Georgia; Tampa, Florida; West Palm Beach, Florida; and online.
South University's Doctor of Pharmacy program is one of only three Schools of Pharmacy in the state of Georgia.
South University's Distance Education division has received recognition for academic excellence in distance education programs, most notably in the Information Technology and Criminal Justice programs.
