The largest public technical college in Washington, Bates Technical College is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Additionally, specific career education programs are certified or approved by the American Welding Society, Commission of Dental Accreditation, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress, National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation, the Professional Truck Driver Institute, and the Washington Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission.

Bates Technical College is committed to the education and advancement of people in career, academic, and life skills while meeting the changing needs of individuals, families, organizations, and community.

Bates operates on a quarter system, September through July. The college operates on an open enrollment basis, meaning that students may enter programs at nearly any time in the year.

In addition to the services we offer to our students, many of our career programs offer services to the public, including cosmetology, barbering, dental assisting, denturist and automotive programs. Services in these programs are available to the public for a fee, and all work is performed by students.

Bates Technical College is located in Tacoma, Washington, approximately 35 miles south of Seattle and 30 miles north of the state’s capital city, Olympia. The college operates on three campuses, with over 600,000 square feet of classrooms, shops, meeting rooms, and offices.

Bates Technical College, located in Tacoma, Washington, is the state’s largest technical college. The college is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. It offers two-year associate of technology degrees, certificates and industry certifications, and maintains articulation agreements with several four-year universities. Some of the college’s two-year degrees are transferable see college transfer.

Enrollment and academics

Bates operates 11 months of the year on a continuous enrollment, open entry, open-exit basis. In most programs, students are admitted on Mondays as openings occur, except during the month of August. Weekly information sessions are held to help students choose and select an area of interest.

Bates presents education in a competency-based format. Classroom settings are similar to a real-world workplace and students are evaluated as they would be at an outside business. The college works closely with industries in all career education areas to continually review and refine the curriculum. The college offers extended learning, business and management training, home and family life programs, and apprenticeship training.

Students can earn an Associate of Technology degree, Associate of Applied Science-T degree, Certificate of Competency, or a Certificate of Training. Classes are also offered in basic studies, ESL and GED preparation. A Technical High School and a Running Start program are available to students 16 – 20 years of age who have not yet earned a high school diploma. Worker retraining funds provide unemployed and laid-off workers with immediate access to training at Bates.

Bates Technical College offer the following non-degree programs:

  • Adult Education: courses help adults complete their basic education or strengthen mathematics, reading and language skills. Classes are available in basic studies, English as a Second Language (ESL), family literacy, GED preparation and high school completion.
  • Apprenticeship training: Bates registers over 1,500 apprentices annually and currently operates 16 apprenticeship disciplines that offer classroom and on-the-job training.
  • Articulation Agreements: Bates works with K-12 school districts and other colleges and universities to provide additional educational options for students.
  • Business & Management Training Center: provides on-site customized supervisory and staff professional development and technical skills training to companies, governmental entities, and non-profit organizations.
  • Distance Learning
  • Educator Training Center: provides teacher certification and paraeducator training.
  • Extended Learning: to enhance existing skills and enrich personal interests.

  • High School Completion: allows students 21 and older who have not completed high school to take courses at Bates to satisfy high school completion requirements.
  • Home and Family Life: offers an extended array of job training, extended learning opportunities, parenting and childbirth classes.
  • Job Readiness Training Center: collaborates with many WorkFirst partner agencies and community-based organizations to identify career-education opportunities for those seeking to re-enter the workforce ore retrain for a new industry.
  • KBTC-TV / KCKA:, a public television station in Tacoma, WA, affiliated with the Public Broadcasting Service, owned and operated as a service of Bates Technical College.
  • Post-Secondary Professional-Technical Preparation and Certification: Bates is approved by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction to offer a business and industry route to career and technical education teaching.
  • Running Start: allows high school juniors and seniors to enroll in career education programs at Bates and earn credit towards a high school diploma and a two-year degree.
  • Technical High School: allows high school students between the ages of 16 and 20 to register in career education programs, earning both college and high school completion credits simultaneously. Technical high school students do not pay tuition.
