History

In 1909, the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee moved “to provide for the improvement of the system of Public Education of the State of Tennessee, that is to say, to establish a General Education Fund.” The major thrust of this “improvement” embodied in the legislative act that was to become known as the General Education Bill of 1909 was the establishment of three normals or teacher-training institutions. Following the intent of the act that one was to be located in each of the grand divisions of the state, the State Board of Education assigned the middle Tennessee institution to Murfreesboro.

Opening on September 11, 1911, with a two-year program for training teachers, Middle Tennessee State Normal School evolved into a four-year teachers college in 1925 with the power of granting the Bachelor of Science degree. In 1943, the General Assembly designated the institution a state college. This new status marked a sharp departure from the founding purpose and opened the way for expanding curricular offerings and programs. In 1965, the institution was advanced to university status.

Question: What is it like at Middle Tennessee State University? The good and bad!?

I plan to transfer and visiting the school wont tell me what its really like.

It's a walking campus, so it's easy to get from class to class. There's plenty to do in Murfreesboro and Nashville in terms of dining, shopping, music venues, etc. The teachers I had were really good for the most part, and there are plenty of clubs and organizations on campus. The worst thing I can think of is that parking is an absolute nightmare. In fact, I would recommend paying for a dorm room even if you live off campus just so you have a better chance of getting a parking space. Yes, it is really that bad. However, that is the only real problem, so all things considered it's a good school to go to.

Question: Middle Tennessee State University question?

I will be starting at MTSU this fall and I have orientation tomorrow and I had a couple questions about it. For anyone that is a student there could you tell me what CUSTOMS is like?? How many people are usually in a group and what all do you do? I mean I've read the schedule but there's some things on there that I'm not interested in attending. Just tell me everything you can remember about it please! Thanks!

HI! I actually work with CUSTOMS at MT. It's very informative and helps you to get to know the campus better. IT helps you to make out your schedule to see what classes will be best for you not only according to your major but according to a plan to graduate in 4 years. However, I do believe there are some boring parts of CUSTOMS. lol! It lasts all day and honestly, if you know someone that goes here, you'll be fine. Just as long as you can figure out what types of classes to better fit your schedule and needs. Hope this helps..

I don't think it's hard at all. It's not competitive like some of the other schools in the area. I think if you're a slightly above average student, you can get in just fine.

Question: I need people who are currently attending or have graduated recently from one of these two colleges?

If you have graduated from Middle Tennessee State University(MTSU) or Univeristy of Tennessee(UT) then please help me. I'm about to graduate and those are my two dream colleges and I need help deciding. I would like people who have attended these colleges views of them (I know some of it will be bias) so I can help decide. I believe I want to major in Law, English or Computers. And by UT i mean UT Knoxville

MTSU is a great school. Large but small. It is located in a medium size town and not that far from Nashville. They have a great computer science program. UT in Knoxville....I went to graduate school there. Good things and bad things. Parking is HORRIBLE. Classes are large. It is a good, working college and prepares people for the real world. The population on campus, students and staff are over 25,000. It does have the greatest college football team. Beat bama yesterday. You need to decide what your major is going to be first and see which one is best for you. UT Martin near Memphis, I don't like. UTC in Chattanooga, is so close to the projects it is kind of scary at night. Big decision.
