Berkeley College - Downtown Manhattan School Description

Established in 1931, Berkeley College is a coeducational college specializing in business. With seven locations in New York and New Jersey, USA, an online "campus," and students from 29 states and 112 foreign countries, Berkeley is widely recognized for its academic excellence.

Berkeley draws its strength from balancing academic preparation, professional training, and hands-on experience. Since its inception, the College has evolved and expanded to be recognized as a premier educator in preparing men and women for careers in business.

Berkeley's commitment to excellence constitutes the primary objective of the College. Small classes, individualized advisement and counseling, and the development of the student's creative and analytical skills support this commitment. Because Berkeley believes that teaching should encompass both a conceptual and practical perspective, the faculty is selected for both their academic credentials and professional experience. Their experience in business brings an added intellectual reality to the classroom, resulting in a challenging and stimulating learning environment.

Berkeley prides itself on its strong connection to the business community, a partnership that has been fostered and cultivated for more than 75 years. This relationship, along with Berkeley's exceptional reputation, attracts a wide variety of employers. These business experts help design the College's programs to ensure that the professional skills students learn are those that are in demand today. Degree programs include formal internships, providing students with invaluable work experience within their career field, a network of business connections for the future, and assistance in defraying college costs.

One of Berkeley's highest priorities is to ensure that sufficient financial aid is available to all eligible students. Financial aid advisers meet with students to develop a personal plan that meets their specific needs. Funds for educational expenses are available in the form of loans, scholarships, grants, and other awards. Berkeley students are eligible for federal and state grants, including Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Grants, and/or New York TAP or New Jersey TAG, for which repayment is not required. There are also several low-interest loan programs available for students and their parents, offered through the Federal Family Educational Loan Program. Berkeley allocates approximately seventeen million dollars annually for student aid, based on need and/or merit. Recipients of private scholarships can receive matching grants from Berkeley; and a variety of other institutional grants, scholarships, and loans are available.

As Berkeley College plans for the future and responds to the ever-changing job market, it continues to build on its tradition of excellence. The College's focus on business, superior faculty, specialized services, and individualized guidance gives students the best of both worlds -- the intimacy and scholarly authority of a small liberal arts college combined with high-quality educational programs designed specifically for those interested in a career in business. Berkeley's year-round quarter system provides students enrolled in the day division with the option of earning their Bachelor's degree in as little as three years - or the traditional four years. An Associate's degree can be completed in 18 months. Evening/weekend students have the option of completing their Bachelor's degree in less than four years and an Associate's degree in only two years. Weekend and online courses are offered at all campuses. Convenient locations in New York and New Jersey, extensive tutorial resources, state-of-the-art technology, and a full-service placement division are all ways in which Berkeley College offers accessibility and a decided advantage to all of its students.
