From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

The University of Houston–Downtown (also referred to as UH–Downtown or UHD) is a four-year open admissions state university in Houston. With an enrollment of 12,283 students, it is the second-largest of four institutions within the University of Houston System and the fourteenth-largest university in Texas.

History

In 1942, the University of Houston's College of Business Administration added a branch campus in Downtown Houston dubbed the "Downtown Business School". Located at 705 Fannin Street, it soon became known as simply "Downtown School".

On August 6, 1974, the University of Houston acquired the assets of South Texas Junior College, moved the Downtown School to the location and opened the "University of Houston Downtown College" (UHDC) as a four-year institution. South Texas Junior College's president, W.I. Dykes, later became the namesake of UHD's library. By 1977, the university had an enrollment of 4,500. In 1979, the Texas Legislature approved UHDC as a freestanding university from UH within the UH System.

The college's first four-year degree was a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice and resident students attended for $4 per credit hour.

In 1983, the university changed its name to its current one by dropping the word "college" from its name. During this decade when Houston was booming, UHD succeeded in having the M & M Building named to the National Register of Historic Places, degree programs continued to grow, and UHD's first Red Rose Ball became a signature fundraiser. Tuition increased in 1984 to $12 per credit hour.

In 1992, UHD president Max Castillo came from San Antonio College to lead the university. During the 1990s, UHD focused on becoming a metropolitan university—appealing to traditional students as well as working professionals. During the early 1990s, UHD also began key partnerships with community colleges and it moved to meet greater Houston's demand for qualified teachers when it added a teacher certification program in urban education. During this time, the Weekend College Program began and a new Academic Building and the Jesse H. Jones Student Life Center opened.

Question: Can I get accepted into Baylor College of Medicine by graduating from University of Houston's Honors College? ?

I have been accepted into University of Houston's Honors College and I want to know if it will get me into decent med schools like Baylor or UTMB houston? I know that GPA and MCAT scores matter, but I have also heard that schools play an important role as well. If I can an answer back, this would be great! Thanks

Best Answer

Yes, since it is the Honors College. Keep a 3.5 GPA, then do well on your MCATs. Also keep your BIO GPA high too. Volunteer at hospitals and shadow a doc, so you can earn a letter of rec from him. GL =D

Question: What is the best sorority at the University of Houston?

Okay I'm going back to school! I'm a white 25 years old and am going to finish my bachelor's degree at the University of Houston. I am wondering what would be the best sorority for me to pledge. I'm about partying so I don't really want to pledge an academic or vocational sorority. Am I too old to do that kind of stuff? Do people even pledge as juniors?

Best Answer

I went back to school when I was 24, and you are too old for a sorority. I thought everyone around me was a kid. I had been drinking for nearly 10 years at that point. You'll realize that you're babysitting kids who never drank before. It gets annoying because these kids act their age - 18 or 19.
