University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point School Description
The mission of this system is to develop human resources, to discover and disseminate knowledge, to extend knowledge and its application beyond the boundaries of its campuses, and to serve and stimulate society by developing in students heightened intellectual, cultural, and humane sensitivities; scientific, professional, and technological expertise; and a sense of purpose. Inherent in this broad mission are methods of instruction, research, extended education, and public service designed to educate people and improve the human condition. Basic to every purpose of the system is the search for truth.
We offer our students many opportunities for leadership and service, but, most importantly we provide a supportive and lively environment for studying and learning. UWSP's four academic colleges offer our 8,700 students 100 program choices within 49 majors, plus 78 minors and 16 graduate programs. There are 400 faculty and teaching academic staff, 200 non-teaching academic staff and 350 support staff. The student/faculty ratio is 20 to one. Thanks to our dynamic and dedicated faculty, students enjoy not only stimulating classroom experiences, but also classroom-related learning activities in business, education, the environment, and the professions - otherwise known as service learning.
UWSP is consistently named one of the top Public Midwestern Universities-Master's in U.S. News and World Report's college rankings. In addition, UWSP ranked sixth in the nation in the Sears Director's Cup standings and seven of the Pointer teams placed in the top 10 in the country. Our International Programs offer students study tours on five continents, ranking UWSP among the top master's level institutions in the nation for sending students abroad. Each year more than 400 students travel and study in a foreign country under the auspices of UWSP.
As you can see, UWSP is a premier university located in beautiful central Wisconsin. Not only do our students gain from the many opportunities available on campus, they also benefit from the partnerships we have with the many thriving businesses and organizations of our region. CollapseUniversity of Wisconsin - Stevens Point
From Wikipedia, The Free EncyclopediaThe University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (also known as UW-Stevens Point or UWSP) is a public university located in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. It is part of the University of Wisconsin System, and grants baccalaureate, associate, and master's degrees.
History
UWSP opened its doors in 1894 as Stevens Point Normal School after securing land and funding from the city of Stevens Point and the county. In addition to teacher preparation, "domestic science" (home economics) and conservation education were offered; the latter formed the basis for the College of Natural Resources, nationally recognized for undergraduate and graduate training in natural resources.
In 1927 Stevens Point Normal School became Central State Teachers College and began offering four-year teaching degrees. When post-World War II enrollment became less centered on teacher training and more focused on liberal arts education, the Wisconsin State Legislature intervened, elevating the school to a Wisconsin State College with the authority to grant bachelor's degrees in liberal arts.
Ever larger numbers of students in the 1950s and 1960s led to construction on campus throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. It was during this period, in 1964, that the college became a Wisconsin State University and began offering graduate degrees. Again in the 1970s the school's name changed from WSU-SP to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point after the two state university systems merged. Lee S. Dreyfus became Chancellor in 1974 before going on to become the state of Wisconsin's 40th Governor. Governor Dreyfus was inaugurated on the lawn in front of Old Main on the UWSP campus in 1979.
The campus played host to the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League for their first training camp in 1995. It was part of what was known as the Cheese League, a collection of teams that hold training camp in Wisconsin. Beginning in 1996, the Jaguars have held their training camp in Jacksonville.
