The successful student should be able to function effectively in one of the many specialty areas such as: Hair Stylist, Barber, Hair Colorist, Manicurist, Makeup Artist or as a Beauty Salon Operator. Barbering students learn the art of shaving and trimming facial/neck hair and beards, cutting and dressing hair, fitting hairpieces, giving facial and scalp massages, and applying cosmetic treatments. Barbering students also prepare for licensure as professional barbers at various levels. To promote the success of barbering students, these two year programs include instruction in hair and scalp anatomy and physiology, hairpiece and toupee fitting, equipment operation, health and safety, customer service, and shop business practices. A program that generally prepares individuals to cut, trim, and style scalp, facial, and body hair; apply cosmetic preparations; perform manicures and pedicures; massage the head and extremities; and prepare for practice as licensed cosmetologists in specialized or full-service salons. Includes instruction in hair cutting and styling, manicuring, pedicuring, facial treatments, shampooing, chemical applications, esthetics, shop management, sanitation and safety, customer service, and applicable professional and labor laws and regulations.
