History

CCA was founded in 1907 by Frederick Meyer in Berkeley as the School of the California Guild of Arts and Crafts during the height of the Arts and Crafts movement. The school's first site was the Studio Building on Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley. In 1908 the school was renamed California School of Arts and Crafts, and moved to the former Kellogg Primary School at the corner of Oxford and Center Street in downtown Berkeley, across from the campus of the University of California. In 1910 the school moved to the site of Berkeley High School on Allston Way. In 1922 the school moved to a new, permanent campus on the former James Treadwell estate in Oakland located just east of the intersection of College Avenue and Broadway, where it remains today. In 1936 the school became the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC).

In recognition of the growth of the college and its broad curriculum as well as for image reasons, the college was renamed California College of the Arts. CCA dropped the word "Crafts" from its name in 2003 and is now simply known as "CCA", Many students and faculty voiced objection about the name change, and still refer the school as CCAC.

Question: Is California College of Art a respected university? Does it have a good reputation?

Is it better than San Francisco Art Institute? What is the difference? What other schools are good art schools in the SF Bay area?

CCA is an excellent school. I am currently a student . I am majoring in illustration and community arts. All of my instructors work in their fields, and I Iearn a lot from them. The alumni at CCA go on to work as animators for Disney and pixar, show their work in major museums, and take on jobs as designers and architechs. A lot of times when I say that I go to an art school. People think that I'm not going to a real school.Their mistake though. Each semester I am swamped with hours of work.Studio assignments as well as History ,Biology and Math. People think that being an artist is easy. I am here to tell you its not. Its work. Other friends I have go to Sac State and UC Davis. They get more time to party than I do. It takes a real commitment to get thru this school. CCA was also voted best one of the Best U.S. Design Schools.Business Week names CCA as one of the nation's best design schools in its October 9, 2006, issue. You should go to a campus tour to decide for yourself. Here are some answers to your other questions: I would'nt recommend The Art Institute to anyone. My friend went their to study fashion design after high school. What she later found out was that she had to pay $80,000 a year to attend, because the they have a quarter system, CCA has semesters, so you only pay twice a year. She had to drop out. I have also attended The Academy of Art in SF. The difference here is in its way of teaching. At the Academy the school is more restricted, they want you to draw and paint like them, and at CCA their is more of a studio enviorment. We have more freedom to be ourselves, and push past our limits. CCA also has great financial aid availibility. Each year I receive schlorships from the school, you still need to fill out a FAFSA though. I hope this will be of help to you. Jenny
