Founded in 1931, Ringling College of Art and Design is a private, independent, nonprofit, four-year college. Ringling College of Art and Design recognizes that artists and designers play a significant role in society. The School's primary mission is to provide programs leading to degrees that prepare students to be discerning visual thinkers and ethical practitioners in their chosen area of art and design.
Visual arts professionals must understand diverse aspects of past and present cultures, and develop their capacity for creative expression and effective communication. Ringling College of Art and Design's curriculum, therefore, balances the teaching of technical knowledge and skills with the development of critical, conceptual and creative abilities and supports courses that provide historical, multicultural, global and future perspectives. Ringling College faculty consists of professionally active and teaching-oriented artists, designers and scholars.
Ringling College of Art and Design strives to enroll both full- and part-time students from diverse backgrounds who intend to become professionals in the visual arts. Through its policies and practices, the School supports excellence in teaching and fosters the aesthetic, intellectual, professional, personal and social development of its students. Academic programs and advising, career services, and an extensive co-curricular student life program prepare students for an art or design profession, or when appropriate, for continued studies on the graduate level.
In addition to its degree program, Ringling College offers courses, lectures, exhibitions and other art-related services to the local and regional community through its gallery, library, continuing education and community service programs.
Ringling College of Art and Design is quite unique among colleges of art and design, offering a dynamic and diverse Student Life program. The Office of Student Life provides a variety of programs and services to the Ringling College campus community designed to promote the artistic development, academic success, personal growth and well- being of the student body. Students are encouraged to take advantage of all Ringling College has to offer by using the resources provided by the staff for problem-solving and assistance. Staff specialize in a number of areas including Residence Life, Student Activities, Student Organizations, Volunteer and Community Service, and Counseling and Medical services.

Ringling College offers BFA degrees in Computer Animation, Graphic and Interactive Communication, Fine Art, Illustration, Interior Design, and Photography and Digital Imaging. Minors and concentrations include Fine Arts, Photography and Digital Imaging, Game Design, Visual Development, and Business of Art and Design. Ringling's Computer Animation Program was recently rated the Best Computer Animation Program in North America by the acclaimed 3D World magazine in 2007.
History of Ringling College of Art & Design
Founded on March 31, 1931, the school was originally a joint venture between Mayor Bee, of the famed Ringling Brothers Circus and the Ice Violin, then President of Southern College which is now called the Florida Southern College of Lakeland. After much negotiation, it was decided that the school would be formed and that its name would be The School of Fine and Applied Art of the John and Mable Ringling Art Museum. The school was later renamed to the Ringling School of Art and Design. The building chosen as the site of the new school was originally a 2-star hotel. It was bought and it is now known as Keating Center and is used to house the administrative services, and part of the dormitory and classroom space.
In 1931, there were only 75 students and 13 faculty members. Each student paid $783 per year for tuition, board, room, fees, and books. Also, each student attended chapel services everyday and if they wanted to leave the town, written permission had to be received by the school's president or Dean of the College. One notable faculty member included Dr. Laura Ganno-McNeill, the first woman in the United States to have ever received a doctorate. Harold Fennyhough, known for his charcoal portraits, also taught at the school during the late 1940s.

Best AnswerThe FAFSA website has two numbers: $28,720.00 - cost of tuition, room, and board. $32,425.16 - estimated cost to attend in 2013. I believe this is for one school year. (see link below.) For just tuition, you may have to contact the school directly. One of my relatives went to school there about 6 years ago. At that time I think the cost was around $20K a year including living expenses. The cost of living is always going up! |

Best AnswerThey probably don't want to see all these anime fans that all draw the same type of drawings over and over again. They are most likely looking for your own style of art, not showing that you are the one to copy other styles, but rather, invent your own new one. They want to see originality ^_^ Try using the skills you learned while drawing anime, and try something new |

Best AnswerI can't find the admissions requirements on their website but there are a bunch of general good ideas to include in any art portfolio. Life drawing - a variety of body types and poses, as well as various amounts of time spent. I was speaking to one of the people who looks over admissions for Sheridan and he said he loves to see ugly run down people in portfolio. His rational was, anyone can draw beautiful people they just copy models out of magazines or their favorite super-heroes. When you see a sketch book full of hobos and angry people on the bus, you know the person loves what they do, and they actually take time to go out into the world to work. Perspective pieces - This could be anything, from city-scapes, to simple still lifes of lamps and vases. You just need to show you've heard of perspective, and can apply it to things. Animation pieces - If you've done a bouncing ball, or a flower sack on scratch paper and it worked out pretty good- include it. Any bit of experience is better then none. Cartooning or sculptures. - Include things that show good volume /weight and energy. these all go a long way. |

Best AnswerHousing is very expensive in Sarasota. My husband and I went to Sarasota one weekend and there was an article in the local magazine that government clerks, teachers, etc cannot afford housing. There is alot of money in Sarasota.
