Springfield Technical Community College

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Springfield Technical Community College better known as STCC (pronounced "stick" by locals) is a two-year community college in Springfield, Massachusetts, in the United States.

History

Springfield Technical Community College was built on the site of the Springfield Armory National Historic Site. The armory, established by George Washington was an important supplier of US armaments for over a century and a half before closing in 1968

Four years earlier, the city of Springfield, Massachusetts had established the Springfield Technical Institute a few blocks to the west. Application exceeded all expectation and the city turned to the soon-to-close armory. The college moved in the year the armory closed. That same year the school was given its current name.

While of the site remained in the hands of the National Park Service for historic preservation, went to the college. Century old buildings were reused as classrooms while newer state-of-the-art facilities were built elsewhere.

Today

STCC remains one of the most diverse campuses in the state college system of Massachusetts. Offering the associate degree in over 30 programs and dozens of certificate/completion programs, the college is highly respected in the region. As with all two-year colleges in the United States, graduates of STCC may enroll at four-year colleges or universities to pursue additional education. In 2005 the women's soccer team won the national division 3 NJCAA title. The men's basketball team regularly wins 20 games a season as well and has advanced to Nationals in past seasons.

Knowledge Corridor

STCC is a member of the Hartford, Connecticut, Springfield, Massachusetts regional economic and cultural partnership alliance known as New England's Knowledge Corridor.

Question: massachusetts community college for a semester before UC transfer?

Hi, I'm a HS senior and i plan to go to a cc(community college) for 2 years before i transfer to hopefully UC Berkeley or UCLA. my aunt has invited me to move there and take classes at Springfield technical community college there and work at her restaurant for a summer. - Will i lose some advantage of being a CA cc student? -how long can i stay before they don't consider me a CA CC student? -will the courses transfer to UCs? -is that a good school? -i think it would be a good change of scenery. so is this a good idea?

A community college is a great way to save money during the first two years of college, and it also is an excellent way to boost your grades and join honor societies (STCC, for example, has Phi Theta Kappa, which offers lots of scholarship money). Most credits you get there should transfer, but contact the school (UCLA or UC-Berkeley to find out). Also, it helps if you enroll in a program at STCC--your credits will be more likely to transfer, even if you just do the Liberal Arts Transfer program there. Also, STCC is a great school. It's very well-known and respected (I'd say it's probably the best CC in MA) and the professors and students are excellent. I attend there now and I love it.
