Springfield Technical Community College

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Springfield Technical Community College better known as STCC (pronounced "stick" by locals) is a two-year community college in Springfield, Massachusetts, in the United States.

History

Springfield Technical Community College was built on the site of the Springfield Armory. The armory, established by George Washington was an important supplier of US military armaments for over a century and a half before closing in 1968

Four years earlier, the city of Springfield, Massachusetts had established the Springfield Technical Institute a few blocks to the west. Application exceeded all expectation and the city turned to the soon-to-close armory. The college moved in the year the armory closed. That same year the school was given its current name.

While 20 acres of the 55-acre site remained in the hands of the National Park Service for historic preservation, 35 acres went to the college. Century old buildings were reused as classrooms while newer state-of-the-art facilities were built elsewhere.

Today

STCC remains one of the most diverse campuses in the state college system of Massachusetts. Offering the associate degree in over 30 programs and dozens of certificate/completion programs, the college is well respected in the region. As with all two-year colleges in the United States, graduates of STCC may enroll at four-year colleges or universities to pursue additional education. In 2005 the women's soccer team won the national division 3 NJCAA title. The men's basketball team regularly wins 20 games a season as well and has advanced to Nationals in past seasons.

Knowledge Corridor

STCC is a member of the Hartford, Connecticut, Springfield, Massachusetts regional economic and cultural partnership alliance known as New England's Knowledge Corridor.
