School Description
Provided by Bethany College- LindsborgBethany College, established by Swedish Lutheran immigrants in 1881, is a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
Located in Lindsborg, Kansas, Bethany is a small, private college that provides students personal attention within a caring community. The student body is highly engaged in learning both inside and outside the classroom. All students are encouraged to explore and deepen their own faith, as they find and follow their paths in the world.
The mission of Bethany College is to educate, develop, and challenge individuals to reach for truth and excellence as they lead lives of faith, learning and service.
At Bethany College, we value individuals and believe in community. We know every human being is worthwhile, can make valuable contributions in the world, and is responsible for doing so. Working together in service to one another builds character, deepens relationships, improves our quality of life, and brings meaning to life.
One of the best things about Bethany is that it's an active campus.
The Student Life Office at Bethany College is focused on nurturing and challenging students in their living and learning communities to develop competencies for holistic success.
The staff seeks to educate students about their responsibilities as students at a private, church-related, liberal-arts based college.
The lessons taught are to empower students to be thinkers about the decisions they will have to make at college, both in and out of the classroom.
Bethany College- Lindsborg
From Wikipedia, The Free EncyclopediaBethany College is a small liberal arts college located in Lindsborg, Kansas. Founded in 1881 as a preparatory school, the college now has an enrollment of 500 students from 27 states and 12 foreign countries (as reported on the college's website) and offers programs in education, fine arts, humanities, business, social sciences, the sciences, and pre-professional areas. Bethany is a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It has a Swedish heritage that remains a significant influence on campus. One famous tradition at Bethany is performing Handel's Messiah each year at Easter, an event that dates back to 1882. On the campus grounds can be found the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery, an art gallery dedicated to the artist Birger Sandzén, who taught there for many years. One of the top academic colleges in the Midwest (Rated #44 in the Midwest by U.S. News World Report), Bethany students often find themselves in class sizes of less than twenty.

The men currently have won 34 straight KCAC matches in a row, undefeated in the last 5 years of conference play. The Bethany College Men's golf team also held one of the longest winning streaks in all of college sports; winning the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship from 1994-2005.
In May 2007, Bethany College announced the appointment of Dr. Edward F. Leonard III as the college's 13th President. Dr. Leonard previously served as Vice President for College Advancement at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio.

College Advice |
Question: Should I move to Kansas? Help?I'm thinking about going to school at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. The school is supposed to be one of the top academic schools in the midwest but it is very small. It has 620 students and the town only has 3500 people. I have lived in California my whole life and the town I live in is considered small and it has 93,000. Is anybody here from kansas and known anything about bethany or lindsborg. Do you guys think I should go. They are giving me a tennis scholarship so I will only have to pay 5,000 dollars a year tuition and they have a great tennis team. What do you guys think. Will I be able to adjust to the small town environment and slow pace.37 months ago
Best AnswerBethany has a great reputation, first of all. I have lived across the world and have attended schools from a private college with 350 students (on the Kansas state line, so I understand about the rural concerns) to a large state university with 35,000 students, to a few in between, including overseas study. As the previous answerer stated, each experience adds to who you are and should be treated as an adventure. I would add the following: as a member of the tennis team, you are going to be part of a close knit group that enjoys traveling together as well. So you aren't going to be stuck in the middle of nowhere because of your connections to the team. Many smaller schools offer great trips to 'cities' for cultural outings, shopping, etc... so you should have the chance to get out that way as well. I work for a small school (the same school with 350 students that I attended years ago) and we constantly offer concerts, dances, field trips, etc.... for our students and no one complains of being bored. Our students come from across the world - 44 states and 19 countries this semester - and it is fun to watch them adjust to small town life. Probably the greatest asset for schools like Bethany and mine is that you have the opportunity to truly develop life long friendships. You will get to know your coach, your professors, and your classmates much better. Bethany will offer smaller class sizes and everyone will know your name - from the president of the college down. That is a great feeling, believe me. I have a feeling that you are struggling with whether or not you want to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond. If you have to have constant excitement, like breaking rules, and don't like to be held accountable, then Bethany may not be the place for you. If you are looking for a college experience in which you can be nurtured and develop into a leader into adulthood, then give it a shot. By the way, I thought Wash U in St. Louis was 'the Ivy League of the Midwest.' I think Miami of Ohio, Stephens College, and Grinnell are only a few of the others that claim that as well. The fact is, the rural Midwest is a great place for private education and I suggest you try Bethany. It has a great reputation and I've met numerous folks from there over the years at professional conferences and I am very impressed with them, even though they are some of my college's competition. |

Best AnswerI looked at a map...it looks like Lindsborg is a good 3 hours from Kansas City, where I'm from. I've never been to Lindsborg before, but I've driven near there on Interstate 70. That part of Kansas has a lot of farmland and a few small towns here and there. You'll definitely want to have a car so you can roadtrip to larger places on weekends like Kansas City, or possibly Denver (further away, 7 hrs maybe?). Wichita, KS is near there also. Wichita's a city of maybe 300,000-400,000 people. There probably won't be a lot going on in Lindsborg, but I'm sure you know that already. If you stay busy with school and tennis you'll be fine, just take a roadtrip somewhere fun once in a while. |
