School Description
Provided by South Georgia CollegeSouth Georgia College is a two-year college focused on a core of strong teaching and personalized academic advising. It has a long and distinguished tradition of service to the people of Georgia. Founded in 1906 in the town of Douglas, SGC sits on 190 acres in this rural southeast Georgia town.
At South Georgia College, we seek to help our students develop the capacity for continuous learning and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances in a multicultural and interdependent through constant evaluation of our curriculum.
South Georgia's nearly 1,500 students come primarily from southeastern and south central Georgia, but the college's residential facilities enable the institution to draw students from other regions of the state, neighboring states and foreign countries. The average age of students is 24-years-old, and 60 percent are women.
Outside of class, students can participate in a wide range of activities, cultural events and intercollegiate sports including baseball, soccer and softball. The campus serves as a cultural and athletic hub for area residents and for students. The college is well located for fun and relaxation - Georgia's Golden Isles are only 90 minutes away and Jacksonville, Florida, is a two-hour drive.
Douglas is a friendly, growing community of 17,000. Situated just off the main highway through town, the campus is a short walk from shops, restaurants and supermarkets. South Georgia College is easily reached from US Highways 221 and 441 and Georgia Highways 32, 135 and 158. Interstates 16, 75 and 95 are also nearby. SGC is located two hours from the Atlantic Beaches and Jacksonville, Florida, and four hours from Atlanta. The climate includes short, mild winters, and delightful spring and fall seasons. Summers, not surprisingly, are quite warm, but not unbearable.
