Southeastern University is a private, non-profit undergraduate and graduate institution of higher education located in southwestern Washington, D.C., in the United States. It was established in the YMCA 1879 and chartered by an Act of Congress in 1879. Its current president is Elaine Ryan, Ph.D., who replaced Charlene Drew Jarvis on March 31, 2009 after 13 years of service to the flailing school. It has degree programs in Criminal Justice, Child Development, Public Administration, Business Management, Accounting, Finance, Liberal Studies, Computer Science, and Allied Health, a program initiated in 2006 at Greater Southeast Community Hospital. There are also certificate programs in entrepreneurship, property management, real estate, Web development, and others. It is a member of the Consortium of Universities of the Metropolitan Washington Area.

Southeastern University has a total enrollment of about 867. About 77% are locally based, and a majority are female, but there is also a significant international enrollment consisting of students from over 50 countries.

The University is currently accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, but on March 5, 2009, the Commission acted to remove the university's accreditation on August 31, 2009.

History

Southeastern began as a series of classes offered by the YMCA of the District of Columbia in 1879. The Washington School of accountancy was added in 1907, and in 1923 the university incorporated under the authority of the District of Columbia as, "Southeastern University of the Young Men's Christian Association of the District of Columbia." An August 19, 1937 federal charter from Congress renamed the institution to "Southeastern University". The university has since gained other colleges.

Merger

Southeastern University is currently in advanced merger negotiations with the GS Graduate School, also based in Washington, DC. The talks began well before the adverse accreditation action taken against Southeastern. Details of the merger are largely speculative and if the merger collapses the fate of Southeastern University is unknown.
