The University of Missouri-St. Louis provides excellent learning experiences and leadership opportunities for a diverse student body. The University of Missouri, St. Louis (UM-St. Louis) is one of four campuses of the University of Missouri System. It was established in 1963 and is the third-largest university in the state. In addition to its role in advancing knowledge as part of a comprehensive research university, UM-St. Louis has a special mission determined by its urban location and its shared land-grant tradition. It works in partnership with other key community institutions to help the St. Louis region progress and prosper.

UMSL enrolls more than 15,500 students from 46 states and 77 countries and 40,000 additional students in non-credit continuing education programs. Despite its international flavor, the UMSL student body comes primarily from, and reflects the diversity of, the region. More than 1,200 students live on campus and 175 students participate in one of 11 NCAA Division II sports programs.

UMSL employs more than 1,400 full-time and part-time teaching and research faculty members. Faculty are experts in their respective fields and routinely publish books and articles in nationally renowned academic journals. Several of its 131 degree and certificate programs have attained national recognition for their quality, including biology, criminology, education, information systems, international business, nursing, optometry, psychology, public policy and tropical ecology. The UMSL faculty as a whole was ranked 5th nationally among universities with fewer than 15 doctoral programs in the Academic Analytic’s Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index – immediately behind Boston College and Georgetown University.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis offers programs of study leading to the Ph.D.: applied mathematics, biology, business administration (information systems), chemistry, criminology and criminal justice, education, nursing, physics, physiological optics, political science, and psychology. The Ed.D. and Ed.S. in education is also administered by the Graduate School. The O.D. in optometry is administered by the School of Optometry.

The University occupies a suburban campus of more than 300 acres northwest of St. Louis, the major metropolitan area in the state. The campus has easy access to the airport and the downtown area via the MetroLink, which has stops on both the north and south campuses. St. Louis has an abundance of cultural, sports, and entertainment opportunities.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL, commonly pronounced "uhm-suhl") is one of four universities in the University of Missouri System. Established in 1963, it is the newest university in the UM System. , it is the largest university by enrollment in the St. Louis area. UMSL's campus is located on the former grounds of the Bellerive Country Club in Saint Louis County. Additional facilities are located at the former site of Marillac College.

Bachelor's, Master's, and doctoral programs are offered through the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business Administration, the College of Education, the College of Fine Arts and Communication, the College of Nursing, and the College of Optometry. The business school is AACSB-accredited and is the only university in the St. Louis area to also be AACSB-accredited in accounting. Preprofessional, a joint engineering program with Washington University in St. Louis, and evening programs are also offered. UMSL is home of an optometry school, providing its students with a doctorate (OD). Only 17 optometry schools exist in all of North America including Puerto Rico. The Pierre Laclede Honors College is UMSL's honors program.

The University contains three libraries: The Thomas Jefferson Library which is the main library of the University, the Ward E. Barnes Library which houses the materials of relevance to the nursing, education and optometry programs, and the St. Louis Mercantile Library which was founded in 1846 and is the oldest library west of the Mississippi River. The campus contains two stops on MetroLink, St. Louis' regional light rail system. A student center, academic buildings, parking structures, a performing arts center, and residential housing have been constructed over the past ten years as part of campus improvement programs. UMSL is sometimes confused with Saint Louis University (SLU, pronounced "slew"), but they are separate institutions. UMSL is a public university, while SLU is a private Jesuit university. The University has a dual-enrollment agreement with Gulf University for Science and Technology, Kuwait.
