At USF, we believe a university can help change the world. To do that, academic programs are innovative as well as pragmatic. Learning moves from the theoretical in the classroom to practical application in the laboratory, the community and the world.

* USF students are engaged in their disciplines through internships, research opportunities, study abroad, work and service experiences.
* Students are at the forefront of emerging technologies and new sciences, assisting with breakthroughs in fields such as medicine, biotechnology, engineering and the environment with positive impact on lives around the world.
* Students participate in endeavors with global reach: USF is home to the Patel Center for Global Solutions and the only Confucius Institute in the state.

The focus of USF academics is to enable students to see how their specific disciplines can shape the global community… and how they, personally, can impact the world.

University of South Florida

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

The University of South Florida (USF), known within its system as USF Tampa, is a public university system located in Tampa, Florida, USA, with an autonomous campus in St. Petersburg, and branch centers in Sarasota and Lakeland. The main campus is located in North Tampa, near the City of Temple Terrace. It is bordered on the south by Fowler Avenue and on the north by Fletcher Avenue with Bruce B. Downs Boulevard to the west and 50th Street on the east side. The university is in close proximity to the Museum of Science and Industry as well as Busch Gardens and the University Mall shopping center.

The university is the third largest in the state of Florida (after University of Florida and University of Central Florida), with a total enrollment of 44,891 for the 2007 academic year. USF is currently ranked ninth in the country in terms of enrolled students. Academically, USF is a top tier public research university, one of only three in Florida and 63 in the nation.

USF's mascot is the Bull (originally called the Brahman) and its colors are green and gold. The university's sports teams participate at the NCAA Division I-A level. In 2005, USF joined the Big East Conference. USF previously belonged to Conference USA, the Metro Conference, and the Sun Belt Conference.

USF is currently the national headquarters for Phi Alpha Theta, a professional history honor society which promotes the study of history.

History

USF was founded in 1956. However, the university was not officially named until the following year, and courses did not start until 1960. Some of the original proposed names included "Citrus State University", "Sunshine State University," "The University of the Western Hemisphere," "Ponce de Leon University," "Flamerica University," and "The University of Florida at Temple Terrace." Former US Representative Sam Gibbons was instrumental in the school's creation when he was a state representative and is considered by many to essentially be the school's founder. It was built on the site of Henderson Air Field, a World War II airstrip. Although located in west-central Florida, at the time of establishment USF was the southernmost public university in the State of Florida, a geographic situation that lent USF its sometimes confusing name.

I dont know, bt many have told me that going there would look real bad if you want a job. I dont know if they are talking crazy, I just dont know. I am interested because of their chemical enineering program. I just dont know if I should attend after what many have told me. Which other university in Florida is an excellent University?

Who are these people who are telling you that the University of South Florida would look real bad if you want a job? Are these high school seniors or are they job recruiters in Florida? What I'm getting at is that sometimes there is a tendency by students and others to trash local universities that don't have the reputation of the top national universities. I believe this is not good, as many of these local universities that are not as well known may provide the good education that someone needs to learn. South Florida is accredited by the regional accrediting agency, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and its engineering programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. These are key accreditations needed for an American engineering school so a degree from the school should be credible. No Florida school is ranked as high as ivy league schools with regard to general overall reputation, but Florida, Florida State (in conjunction with Florida A&M), and Miami also have engineering programs and are well known nationally (in part because of big time sports). But even on that measure, South Florida is make some strides with joining the Big East Conference. So I would think that South Florida is as good a place to go, unless your hung on an elite national university at the top of the US News & World Report rankings.
The time has come, I'm finally a senior!!! I have to apply to colleges, and I have no idea where I want to go. I was looking around and I found out about the University of South Florida. I'm from Louisiana so I don't know anything about Florida Universities. Is it really as good as Florida State and the University of Florida, or is it like the reject school. what is there reputation???

For a while it was kind of like the Plan B school for locals, but their standards and reputation have both been rapidly increasing in recent years. It's not a "reject school" by any means. It can be pricey if you're coming in from out-of-state, though, that's the only thing. What you should do is figure out a general idea of what you would like to study, then apply to universities which offer the best programs in that particular field and also related fields. University of South Florida has top-notch medical programs (doctoral and nursing), engineering programs, and education programs. Their College of Business Administration is also very well-respected within the area and many of the programs within the College of Arts and Sciences are worthwhile as well. I think the Religious Studies program at USF, last I heard, is one of the largest Religious Studies programs in the American university system. Good luck with your applications!
Arizone State, University of South Florida or University of Florida? ok if you're going to leave gay hater comments then plz don't even bother answering the question..if you must know i take school very seriously and i just wanted to know what school had good parties not so I can wastle my life away at every party, but to see which school had the best parties if i chose to attend every once in a while

In Florida I would have to say USF since it is near a big city with a lot more to do, while at UF, there are only two places you can really party. The handful bars on University Avenue across from campus or the handful of bars and clubs downtown. You can pretty much hit even single bar and club within a span of a couple of weeks. Not much to do away from campus and you are really not close to a beach like USF is. I don't know about ASU.
Hello, Im looking for colleges near the Tampa area.... I know of University of Tampa and the University of South Florida but what others are there??? (at least within a 3hour radius of tampa)

Oh I went to University of South Florida. I just graduated Dec. 2006. It is a really cool school,. parties every night.. u can create a schedule around them. lol. Anyways, there is Florida Southern College which is in Lakeland (www.flsouthern.edu). Lakeland is only about 40 minutes away from Tampa. I actually went to Florida southern for a year, but it is in the middle of a small town, so I left for USF. There is also Eckerd college(but doesnt have dat much of a reputation, too small, and unknown around tampa or Florida). There is the Florida party school, which is Univ. of Florida. UF is 3 hrs away from tampa. www.Ufl.edu. there is also southeastern college in Lakewales also around 40 minutes from Tampa - it is very close to Lakeland. There is also FAMU.. gosh so many schools, I hope this info helps! Gooluck! Keep in mid that if u go to either Uni. of Tampa, Univ. of South Florida, or Univ. of Florida, u would have greater opportunity to intern at big firms because these schools are close to downtown areas. I am talking from experience, if u have some big company names on ur resume b4 u graduate, u are sure of a gr8 job after college. Goodluck!
I can't decide!! I know GW is top-notch, but I see that it is somewhat limited in some programs, especially the media program. If anyone has attended any of these 2 universities, please give pros/cons of each. Thank you!

USF is great party school, great weather. But it does not compete in any area with GW. If you are looking for media, look to a real media school. USF is fine, but if you can get into GW, you can do better than USF.
If you could tell me why that would be great

USF is WAY better! I went to UCF and I HATED it! The campus isn't in the best area, the parking is horrible, and the teachers are ALWAYS late for classes! USF teachers seem to care more about the classes they teach, and although it is in Tampa it is in a LOT nicer area then Orlando. USF is more well known and the best place to take certain majors in Florida is at USF. Orlando sucks, and no one should move there if you don't have to!!
I'd like to know what the atmosphere is like and all that good stuff, please.

I'm in a graduate program at USF. It's a very active campus. There always seems to be something going on. The campus is extremely diverse and the administration prides itself on that. Sports, of course, is extremely big and there is lots of Bull Pride. If you have anymore specific questions you may e-mail me at miss_rhomantic@yahoo.com

Both colleges are good it depends which degree you are seeking. Undergraduate medical is available at the University of South Florida now, but UCF is in the process of having a medical school in the near future. I graduated from UCF and obtained a well rounded education. UCF has an Honors college (Burnette) if you have the grades. I have found that your education is only successful as the amount of time you are willing to invest in it. Check both colleges out online and make an appointment to visit the department in which you are interested in obtaining a degree. Good luck to you.
I'm trying to find info on phd programs (political science, history, international studies especially) at USF (university of south florida) but I'll be damed if I can figure out their VERY complex website.... please help... just need some links to their phd programs...thanks! www.usf.edu

I didn't have any problems finding the information (see the link below). The main reason you had trouble finding PhD program information in those fields is that USF doesn't offer a PhD in those fields.
