Howard University From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Howard University (HU) is a private, coeducational, nonsectarian university located in Washington, D.C., United States.

History

Established on March 2, 1867 under a charter enacted by Congress and approved by President Andrew Johnson, the college was named after General Oliver O. Howard who was commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau and the college's third president. A historically black university, the college currently ranks 96th among national universities in the U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges 2008" rankings. Howard University is the number-one producer of African American Ph.D.s in the United States. It is often known as the Black Harvard.

Howard was established by a charter in 1867, and much of its early funding came from endowment, private benefaction, and tuition. An annual congressional appropriation administered by the Secretary of the Interior funded the school. Today, it is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and is partially funded by the US Government, which gives approximately $235 million annually. From its outset, it was nonsectarian and open to people of both sexes and all races. Howard has graduate schools of pharmacy, law, medicine, dentistry and divinity, in addition to the undergraduate program. The current enrollment (as of 2003) is approximately 11,000, including 7,000 undergraduates. The university's football homecoming activities serve as one of the premier annual events in Washington.

Howard University has played an important role in American history and the Civil Rights Movement on a number of occasions. Alain Locke, Chair of the Department of Philosophy and first African American Rhodes Scholar, authored The New Negro, which helped to usher in the Harlem Renaissance. Ralph Bunche, the first Nobel Peace Prize winner of African descent, served as chair of the Department of Political Science. Stokely Carmichael, also known as Kwame Toure, a student in the Department of Philosophy and the Howard University School of Divinity coined the term "Black Power" and worked in Lowndes County, Alabama as a voting rights activist. Historian Rayford Logan served as chair of the Department of History. E. Franklin Frazier served as chair of the Department of Sociology. Sterling Allen Brown served as chair of the Department of English.

Any graduates of alumni from Howard University ? I am a prospective student entering for the fall semester. I missed all of the open-house opportunities so i need some feedback. How is the university like ? Do they have a medical school ? Are there alot of serious people ? I've heard things about the neighborhood and how treacherous it is to walk by yourself day and night, is it true ?

\I went to Howard and recently graduated. The university is a closed campus that is very friendly and urban. Howard University Hospital and medical school is located right down the block from the main campus. Most of your friends will be made from the dorms (Towers if you end up there.) Administration (Financial Aid, Bursar, etc.) can be slow and have been known to mess up paper work from time to time, but they straighten it out in due time. The students there get the bad rap of being "uppity" but you will see that's not true... As far as the neighborhood, its relatively safe, but if you are walking past 7th and Georgia, going away from campus towards the Shaw/Howard Metro Station, it can be a little "ghetto," so use your best wits when walking late at night there. There is a shuttle service that takes students from the metro to their dorms all times of the day and night, so that should not be a problem (Plus its in DC... this isn't the equivalent of Kansas you know.) Good luck with your decision, and keep Howard in mind, knowing that its one of the BEST institutions for African-Americans in the nation, hands down... GO BISON!

I like the Henley Park Hotel, on Mass.Ave NW. It's beautiful and well-located. And, they offer a "preferred rate" for Howard Univ. visitors. www.henelypark.com
I am from Texas and I will be attending Howard this fall. I am just wondering if I will truly enjoy my experience while I'm there. I am extremely excited and I hope that I made a good decision.

You will love it. Howard is best black U in the US and you will be in Washington, DC, the heart of the government and a great place to live. Just be careful. Some parts of the city aren't safe. Always go out with groups.
I'm thinking of going to Howard University for a health sciences degree. I'm afraid that a degree from Howard will not be reputable and that I will not be able to effectively compete in the workplace. It's sad to think this way, but I've heard some people say that it doesn't "look good" to have graduated from there and that the degree won't be worth the paper it's written on. I just need an honest answer from an employer. I will be obtaining a BS in Physician Assistant studies. Thank you.

Yes. It is probably the most famous traditionally African-American University in the United States. If you do a bit of research, you will find that the graduates of Howard University include Thurgood Marshall, Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court, Toni Morrison (Nobel Prize - Literature), numerous politicians, diplomats, musicians, actors and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. Howard has quite a bit of name recognition across the US. It was traditionally known as the "Black Harvard." Howard has both a Medical School and a College of Pharmacy and Nursing. A degree from Howard would only be a detriment if the person reviewing you resume has prejudice against African-Americans or traditionally African-American colleges.
