University of New Orleans - Lakefront School Description

The University of New Orleans (UNO), the urban research university of the State of Louisiana, provides essential support for the educational, economic, cultural, and social well being of the culturally rich and diverse New Orleans metropolitan area. Located in an international city, the university serves as an important link between Louisiana and both the nation and the world. The university strategically serves the needs of the region through its undergraduate and graduate programs and through mutually beneficial collaborations with public and private bodies whose missions and goals are consistent with and supportive of UNO’s teaching, scholarly, and community service objectives.

In this year of celebrating the University’s 50th anniversary and the contributions we have made to our city and state, 2009 will bring a renewed sense of mission as we plan for the next 50 years. We must look for new ways to ensure that our mission retains its vitality and its effectiveness. We must look for ways to improve and strengthen our curricula, our educational programs, our facilities, and our resources to support our students and faculty. We must look for ways to ensure that this learning community continues to inspire new generations of leaders for this community and for communities all over the world.

This year and the years to follow will present new opportunities to enlarge the scope of our influence in our academic programs of excellence. We must take advantage of those opportunities to ensure that our students graduate with the skills and frameworks of knowledge that they must have to be successful leaders in the future.

Planning for the future of the University is ongoing and this spring semester, as each year, will be a time to evaluate, adjust and update the strategic plan. Although economic, political and environmental circumstances may necessitate changing specific strategies, the overall vision remains the same…to be a great urban research university with outstanding academic programs, with exceptional and talented students who are dedicated to learning, with faculty of national and international stature and with a support staff possessing exemplary skills.

These past 50 years, UNO has weathered many ups and downs but I have no doubt that we will continue the momentum we have built as a dynamic institution of education, research, public service and economic growth for New Orleans, for Louisiana, for our nation and our world. Together, we will enhance and preserve the academic greatness of the University of New Orleans.

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

The University of New Orleans, often locally called UNO, is a medium sized public urban university located in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. It is a member of the LSU System and the Urban 13 and is currently headed by Chancellor Timothy P. Ryan.

History

The University of New Orleans, originally called Louisiana State University in New Orleans, was legally established by Act 60 of the 1956 Louisiana Legislature, in the wake of a citizens’ movement to bring tax-supported higher education to the metropolitan area. Greater New Orleans, with more than a fourth of the state’s population, was without a public college or university until that time. As a branch campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LSUNO was conceived as a liberal arts college for commuting students, which might within a few years develop into a true urban university.

An ideal campus site was acquired when the United States Navy abandoned its air station on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain in late 1957 and the Orleans Levee Board leased it to the LSU Board of Supervisors. A quick renovation of barracks, service clubs, and other existing facilities made it possible to begin classes in September 1958, a year ahead of the original schedule. The inaugural convocation was held in a vacant aircraft hangar. This event marked the opening of the first racially integrated, public university in the South. A total of 1,460 students, all freshmen and double the number originally anticipated, arrived for this occasion.

By September 1961, when the new school had become a full four-year institution, the enrollment exceeded 3,000, and the faculty had grown from the original 63 to 150 members. A Junior Division had been established for the academic administration of freshmen, and senior academic divisions had been established in liberal arts, in sciences, and in business administration. Dr. Homer L. Hitt, the first employee and the chief administrative officer, had been promoted from Dean of LSUNO to Vice President of LSU in Charge of LSUNO.

College Advice on University of New Orleans - Lakefront

Question: Is University of New Orleans a good school?

I really want to go to college in New Orleans to study political science. I found University of New Orleans online and it said they have a political science undergraduate major, but is it a good program? Or if it isn't can you tell me a school that has a good program? Thanks in advance!

UNO has a good academic reputation and is known for its political science program. Maybe because it is in a place with intense, varied politics...... Much depends on what you want to do. Many who take political science are actually taking "pre-Law". If yes, compare law school admission rates (I have no idea how well UNO does in that category). Do remember that a bachelor's degree in political science is mainly useful as a step toward a master's degree or PhD. From some of your other answers you appear to be European. If yes, UNO has historically had many international students and has a relationship with the University of Innsbruck (Austria) and serval other European universities: http://oiss.uno.edu/ http://inst.uno.edu/ Good luck!

Question: How good is the University of New Orleans?

Could anybody comment about its reputation, how it ranks regionally? How respected and well known is its College of Engineering? Is it worth to get a MS degree from the UNO?

The College of Engineering at the University of New Orleans is very well respected regionally. I know quite a few people who have gotten interviews based on the fact that they attended UNO. It is a wonderful school and you will get a great education. My only experience with UNO is the undergraduate program, and I don't know anyone there for their masters (you should not get your undergrad at the same place you get your masters). But as I said before, I don't think you can go wrong with a UNO degree! To the other person who responded about Tulane, Tulane no longer has an Engineering Program.

Question: University of New Orleans?

Is anyone familiar with the Univ of New Orleans? I'm considering a transfer down there but am concerned about the quality of education (I currently attend UNC-Chapel Hill)--is it a good school? If you are an employer, what do you think of the school when you see it listed on a job applicant's resume? Some more details: I currently commute to UNC-CH and am considering a major in American history.

It all depends on what you're majoring in, I guess. I am a graduate of UNO in Mechanical Engineering, and I can assure you that the university has an excellent Engineering program. It is not uncommon to hear local employers comment on students graduating the program being better prepared for the workplace than students from LSU - which has a much bigger program. I also hear that the English department is very good as well. But, I will tell you this, the university is primarily a commuter college. While there is campus housing - I believe Privateer Place is the nicer on campus place to live - there is not a campus atmosphere like you would enjoy at a university like UNC. I guess another reason for this is probably because - being in New Orleans - there are so many other places to go party. Also - about the housing - if you were to live off-campus, the surrounding neighborhood is not the best and is still in the midst of alot of recovery from the storm. So if you lived off-campus, you probably wouldn't be too close to school, and rent can be a little pricey.

Question: positives and negatives of enrolling in a masters program in a new Orleans university?

Do you think the programs will still be valuable? Will it be easy to enroll? are they easily accepting people? Have alot of students returned? What is new orleans life like now after the hurricane? what about SUNO. I am interested in psychology and criminology.

Most of the universities are cutting a lot of their programs, so you would need to contact the school itself to see if what you want is even being offered anymore. There are lots of students, but housing is very limited and expensive. If you plan to rent a place, expect to pay $800 to $1000 for a one bedroom apartment. Enrolling and such is pretty much the same as pre-K (pre-Katrina). Life in New Orleans is drastically different than before. Here is the link for SUNO: http://www.suno.edu/ Look up the programs you need, and give them a call.
