San Diego State University

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

San Diego State University (SDSU), founded in 1897 as San Diego Normal School, is the largest and oldest higher education facility in the greater San Diego area (generally the City and County of San Diego), and is part of the California State University system. It is the third-oldest university in the California State University system, and one of the oldest universities in California. SDSU has a student body of approximately 34,500 (as of the beginning of the Fall 2006 academic year) and an alumni base of more than 200,000.

The Carnegie Foundation has designated San Diego State University a "Research University with high research activity." SDSU is the only California State University campus with this classification, which places it among the top 200 higher education institutions in the country conducting research. Notably, pursuant to the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index (FSP Index) released by the Academic Analytics organization of Stony Brook, NY, SDSU is the number one small research university in the United States as of the last two academic years, for both 2005-2006 and 2006-2007.

San Diego State University awards bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees (Ph.D., Ed.D, and Au.D) in a total of 151 fields. SDSU offers the most doctoral degrees of any campus of the California State University system, currently in sixteen academic and research disciplines.

San Diego State University is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, the Southwest Border Security Consortium, and the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, a national organization of universities that promotes science and technology education and research.

College Advice on San Diego State University

Question: i go to a 4th tier university but its undergraduate business program is ranked 71st nationally???

i hear 4th tier means the university is in the lowest college rankings, but i am a part of a college on campus that ranks 71st nationally -- that being business administration. with that being said, although i go to a 'crap' university (San Diego State), will there at least be some recognition from business employers towards business students at San Diego State?

Best Answer

San Diego State is not a crap university. It doesn't matter where you went to school. Businesses are always looking to hire college graduates no matter where they went to school. Don't worry about it.

Question: Is San Diego State University hard to get into??

i live in illinois and i've been wanting to go to cali!! i want to be a nurse and i got a 20 on my act but a 3.6 gpa all 3 years combined on my jr. year i had a 3.9 gpa. i juts want to go to a cal state or sdsu, do you think my chances are slim?

Best Answer

when i was at SDSUthere were waiting lists for everything, get on right away. Start there as a nursing student. The wait list is like 2 years, which will give you just enough time to do all prerequesites, if you go there first then declare yourself a nursing student then you will be placed on the wait list from that time, not from when you start.

Best Answer

No, SDSU is considered a party school. Generally all CSU's are considered below average schools, except for Cal Poly SLO. If you're looking for a good school in SD, then UCSD would be considered a good university.

Question: What Do I Need To Get Into San Diego State University?

How High Of A GPA and SAT and ACT?....Is It Hard To Get Into?....I Heard It Was Party School...Is That True?....Can I Transfer From OSU-Okmulgee?(Oklahoma)

Best Answer

Since you are a transfer student, I don't know how hard it is to get in. I am from the area and I got in pretty easy. No act is needed. Since you are transfer student, SAT don't means as much. Depend on you grade at the previous university. Hell yeah it is a party school. They just open a swimmin pool on campus, call the aqua plex. pool in a middle of a campus, you know we are a party school.

Question: Do you think i have a chance of getting into san diego state university with a GPA of just 3.0?

but i have not taken my SATs or ACTs and im taking them this year and i am starting my senior year in HS. and i know colleges also look at the clubs/groups/sports youve joined..but i dont have any..unless i join something this last year..but will it be too late?

According to College Board (the official provider of SAT testing - and also a decent college info search engine) says that only 16% had a high school GPA of between a 3.00 and a 3.24 - and I'd imagine those 16% either (a) had super high SAT scores (above the school's 25th%) or are minorities. It looks like to get in with a 3.00 you need to score in the high...very high 500s on your Critical Reasoning and Math portions of your SAT and hopefully even higher to really be considered competitive. Yes, San Diego State (because it's more selective than other cal States - eg. Cal State LA or Cal State Northridge) looks at extra curricular activities - can you cram any in your senior year? they may also look favorably on AP classes. It also looks like they look first at in-state students so I believe if you're a CA resident you have a tiny edge over someone out of state with the same numbers. Good luck to you! Just a tip - when you're applying, if you can afford it or get a waiver for it - cast your application net braodly so you have options and if you're rejected from your first choice you have other options. Chapman College and Azusa Pacific University may be worth looking at with your GPA. If you score AMAZING on your SAT tons more schools will open up for you (including UCSD, University of San Diego, Occidental - just to name a few in SoCal).

Question: San Diego State University?

could anyone who goes there or is familiar with the school tell me anything(bad or good) i should know about it before i decide to apply there?i already saw their website, but i would like to hear from people. thanks! i have 3.9 GPA and 1820 on SAT. i have 3.9 GPA and 1820 on SAT. i have 3.9 GPA and 1820 on SAT sorry, it coming up three times was a mistake, im not vain lol

San Diego State University is the most competitive out of all the CSU schools, so make sure you have a higher than average GPA and SAT score. It is about 10-12 miles east of the beach (a lot of students think it is much closer). There are a lot of students that attend so sometimes getting the classes you want can be difficult, but the enrollment systems in place have vastly improved over the years. The school is very social and is great place for people who enjoy the night life. If you want to live and work in the city of San Diego upon graduation, being an SDSU alumni is helpful in networking since a lot of Baby Boomers in management positions attended SDSU in their undergraduate years. Visit the campus if you consider applying there and you'll get a good feel of what it is like to attend.

Question: Should I stay at this college or transfer?

I can't stop thinking about if I should stay at San Diego State University or transfer. I just finished my first year at SDSU and I really enjoyed it so I do not have many complaints, however I've been considering transfering for a while now becuase I think it would be better to graduate from a school with a better reputation. My high school GPA was around 3.65 which i worked very hard for and I went to high school in a good area with very good schools. I think it sucks that I worked so hard for my 3.65 while someone who went to school in san diego easily got a 3.8 and we both ended up at the same school. (This guy who had the 3.8 ended up with a 0.2 gpa his first year while i got a 3.75) I just find that whole thing to be quite unfair. I know if I were to transfer i would probably go to a UC my junior year but I also want to study abroad. CHOICES: 1Stay at SDSU and study abroad jr. year and graduate hopefully with a high GPA 2Transfer and go somewhere with a better reputation

SDSU's reputation is probably better than that of some of the lesser UCs, certainly at the undergraduate level, and it isn't clear you could get into Berkeley or UCLA. The other problem you would face would be that you may lose credits, since the requirements will differ, which may make it harder for you to graduate on time, especially if you want to study abroad. Since you liked your first year at SDSU, I would stay there and do as well as you possibly can. As to your comments about it being unfair that some guy got a better GPA than you did in high school without having to work for it, there are so many possible factors that you don't know about that this is completely meaningless, and not necessarily unfair. Yes, some high schools are more competitive than are others, and college admissions people generally know this. Also, college admissions are not based upon GPA alone, so other factors either validate the GPA or suggest that it was unrepresentative of your ability, and that tends to balance things out.

Question: Nursing School?

Who has a better Nursing School in San Diego? City College, Grossmont or Palomar for a 2 year? SDSU, Pt Loma, or USD for a 4 year?

Best Answer

I know a diploma from SDSU will help you get a job at the UCSD medical center, which is one of the best hospitals in the country. And the pay is really good too, new grads make about $60,000 a year. Grossmont is a very good community college if you want a two year degree, however a four year degree will give you an advantage in the hiring process.

Question: Are only grades (GPA/SAT) important for applying to SDSU, or do they also look at other achievements?

My son would like to go San Diego State University, but he may come in below last years eligibilty index. However, he could provide subject SAT in German and proof achievement in the NSSA competitons. Do those things matter at SDSU?

SAT is very important. I got 2 perfect scores in math and reading, but my writing score was only 720, for a total of 2320. I only read this SAT guide, and that is how I got such high scores: http://www.guideparadise.com/index.php?option=com_guides&task=buy&id=10 I recommend this guide to anyone seeking to get a higher score to get into a first choice college.

I disagree that the weather in San Diego is better than Hawaii. I was born and raised in Hawaii and moved to San Diego after college, and think that it gets too cold here during the winter. Sure, there's less rain and humidity, but if you've lived in Hawaii most your life, chances are you're used to it. Anyway, in general, San Diego is fantastic. I've also lived in the Bay Area (San Jose-Santa Clara area), and it's much warmer in SD than it is in SJ! San Diego is gorgeous, and very close to the beaches. You gotta love that the Pacific Ocean is always a short drive away when you're missing home. San Diegans are very laid back. It's a very family friendly atmosphere. Everyone dresses pretty casual, unlike L.A. There are lots of fantastic restaurants here, the commute's not too horrific (better than L.A., about the same as S.J. for me), and lots to see and do (zoo, Wild Animal Park, SeaWorld, Legoland, and Balboa Park). If you get homesick, there are several L&L's here, two Da Kine's (Pacific Beach and Mira Mesa), and you can get your Hawaiian Sun from Ranch 99 in Clairemont Mesa or even some of the supermarkets in Mira Mesa. SDSU - the camps - is nice. LOTS of walking. It sometimes seems to me like the campus is all uphill. I don't go to school there but do use the library, so unfortunately I can't tell you anything about their student life. Anyway - congrats on getting accepted to SDSU! I hope you enjoy living in San Diego, I know I love it. =)

Question: advertising major? art major?

i want to get into a college that is pretty good in the art area, but im not that interested in attending a school solely designated for art; so far i hear schools like nyu are pretty decent in those areas. i also want to minor in languages.

Best Answer

Two of the universities I graduated from have good to excellent colleges in Art and Business. In the Art departments they have offered not only design but theory, history, composition, the traditional such as drawing, painting, sculpture and such. In the college of business they have offered advertising, portfolio management and the traditional business course such as business planning, capital development and ventures i you want your own company. The universities are San Diego State University (CSUSD) and the University of Oklahoma. While I received my MBA at Oklahoma thus the college of business...advertising; my experience in art in based on my minor in art was at SDSU. As or languages my degrees; BS, MPA and MBA did not require a language. I can only attest that both these universities offer language courses. I hope this gives you at least some information to consider. And yes I have heard NYU is pretty decent. Good luck with your college goals

Question: Info about san diego state university?

can any graduates or undergraduates give me some information about that school. Im interested in going there for advertising but dont no much about it. any info would be great.

I have lived in the West my whole life and everyone hear knows that SDSU is a party school. Everyone around the west want to go there as it is a fun school but keep in mind it is a little harder to concentrate on your studies because you are expected to party hardy. San Diego is terrific. The good points: On the Ocean with beaches Nice people Lots of shopping Indian Casinos Nightlife The SD Chargers live here Old Town San Diego great Mexican food nice weather all year long Bad Points: too much traffic bad rush hour traffic many accidents hard to get around big tourist area close to Mexico (gets college kids in trouble) very very expensive (everything) high high rents The school is nice but very crowded. Better be very motivated to get good grades or you can fail here. Lots of clubs and once you come you never what to leave. Good Luck

Question: SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY... People who graduated from there, did you have a hard time finding a job?

I am thinking about going there next year and majoring in accounting, is it a good school, and did you ahve a hard time finding employment after graduation, please be specific. thanks in advance

Accounting is one of the "hot jobs" with great opportunities for employment nationwide. CPAs are very much in demand and well paid. Yes, SDSU is a fine school and I highly recommend it. Best wishes.

San Diego State University is a fourth tier university that is not particularly selective. It has one thing, and one thing only, going for it -- it is in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. In general, the universities in the California State University system pale in comparison to those in the University of California system. If you really want to be in San Diego, go to UCSD. If you want a good engineering degree -- and can't get into Cal Tech, MIT, Stanford, UC-Berkeley or Georgia Tech -- then you should think about going to the middle of the country. All eleven of the schools in the Big Ten have incredibly good engineering programs. By that -- I mean that they are almost as good as places like MIT and Cal Tech and a hell of a lot better than places like SD State. Sure, the winters are cold in Minnesota and Wisconsin -- but the engineering education is first rate and the cities are very livable. And your chances of getting into at least one of them is probably good.

Most majors at SDSU require a 3.0, some are even lower, for example, if you want to major in English or history, they want you to have at least a 2.4. If you want to be a communications major they want you to have a 3.0. All other majors fall in between a 2.4 and 3.0. So, yes, it is possible for you to attend. If you have some outside activities, you'll be fine!

Question: How good of a college is San Diego State University?

It's my junior year in high school and I've been thinking about going to college out of state. My uncle asked me last year if I would be interested in going to college in San Diego and all I would have to do is give him the word and he would pay my way through. I would just have to work for him in Car Detailing business for the four years I'm in college. After that, I want to- feh, you don't want to hear what I want to do with my life...

Having lived in SD let me say it's a top notch party school! UCSD is the premier public university there, followed by the Jesuit USD. SDSU is a very, very big school and has plenty of local, SoCal, and out of state students. I'd say it's average reputation wise. A degree from there won't knock anybody's socks off, but neither does a bachelor's degree nowadays anyway. Have fun!

Question: Is San Diego State University a good school?

i'm "thinking" about going there. is it hard to get in to? is it easier to transfer there from a community college?

Best Answer

California State universities are good for someone who needs a diploma. If your goal in the life is to have a nice frame with a diploma then SD is good. If you wish to enjoy the years in college - SD is good. But, if you wish to do something in your life - go to a serious university - Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Cornel. Don't just go to a place where you can easily get in. Go to aplace where you can get the knowledge and make contacts with people to enable you in your life.

Question: san diego state university vs san francisco state university?

which one and why?

Best Answer

SDSU is by far the better institution of higher learning, throws much better parties and more frequently. Also, the co-eds at SDSU are so much more dynamic, vibrant, toned and have such tight.....bodies (sorry ladies for being such a chauvinist) during the summer....must be why SDSU has so many guys attending summer school! Also by the way, three things... 1. SDSU is officially known as CSUSD - California State University at San Diego and is an excellent university 2. San Francisco State University is known to be a fine school 3. Perhaps I am a bit bias...I graduated from San Diego State University in 1975 and my father obtained his BA when it was known as San Diego State College and his Masters when it became SDSU...so I suppose I have to vote for the old school

Best Answer

"Moderately difficult , 47% of applicants were admitted." You can guesstimate that the transfer rate will be a little higher. I'd guess you're going to be very happy when you get in.

San Diego State is a much larger university than CSUS and would more likely have more resources (teachers, classes, etc.). Also, living close to the beach beats living close to a cow pasture. I would choose SDSU!!!
