The mission of Evangel University is to provide opportunities for Assemblies of God individuals to develop academically and intellectually in an accredited Christian liberal arts educational program; and to inspire these individuals in a Pentecostal environlment to develop spiritually, emotionally, and culturally in order to serve God and their fellow man in their chosen careers.
Evangel University is a private liberal arts university located in Springfield, Missouri and has, since its foundation, been affiliated with the Assemblies of God. Evangel College became Evangel University on June 8, 1998. Evangel's motto is "Boldly Christian, Unquestionably Academic". The late Dr. J. Robert Ashcroft, father of the 79th United States Attorney General John Ashcroft, was President of the University from 1958-1974.
70% of Evangel students come from outside of the state of Missouri and 77% of the student body live on-campus. Evangel has several sports teams: football men's & women's basketball; men's & women's cross-country, indoor and outdoor track; women's volleyball; men's & women's golf; women's tennis; softball & baseball; and men's & women's cheerleading. Evangel is in the NAIA division and offers sports scholarships. Evangel's mascot is the Crusader. There is a student sponsored Club Soccer Team and several intramural sports (flag football/powder-puff football, basketball, volleyball, and soccer). The Schools competes in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
