The Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio, lives up to its motto and “stands out” from other large public universities with its emphasis on close student-teacher relationships, unconditional acceptance policy, and wide variety of scholarships unique to Shawnee State.
All high school graduates who complete the online application and send in their high school transcripts are unconditionally accepted. Applicants under 21 years of age must also submit their ACT/SAT scores to the admissions office.
Academics at the university include more than 80 undergraduate degree programs. Both associate’s and bachelor’s degrees are offered in a wide variety of fields like:

- Gaming and Simulation Developing Arts
- Biology
- Business Administration
- Computer Engineering Technology
- And many more
The school also offers three master’s degrees: Education (with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction), Education Intervention Specialist (K-12) and Occupational Therapy.
Certificate programs are also offered in Environmental Science and Deaf Studies.
Shawnee State has many student clubs and organizations, like college democrats or republicans, environmental club, Shawnee State philanthropy council, and many more.
Student services are also available, including academic advising, career counseling, and the center for community service, among others.
On campus housing is available, but not required for incoming students.
Tuition is set lower for in-state students. Financial aid is available to those who qualify, including a number of Shawnee State University scholarships..
