Christopher Newport University, or CNU, is a liberal arts university located in Newport News, Virginia, United States. It was established in 1961 as a two-year school of the College of William and Mary. It became a four-year college in 1971, and a university in 1992. Former United States Senator Paul S. Trible, Jr., became President of CNU in 1996. In recent years, applications have gone up by more than 400 percent, and the students’ SAT average has increased by more than 200 points. Nearly 90 percent of CNU's faculty members hold the highest degree in their fields. The campus has been transformed by more than $400 million in capital construction. The institution is named after Christopher Newport, the leader of the expedition that brought the first English settlers to Jamestown.

History

In 1960 the city of Newport News joined together with the Commonwealth of Virginia to create Christopher Newport College, which opened its doors in 1961 and at the time was located in the old John W. Daniel School building. The college was founded as an extension of the College of William & Mary and offered extension courses that had already been available in the area for some time. In 1964 the college was relocated to its current location, a tract of land purchased and donated by the city. In this same year, the college's first permanent building was dedicated as Lewis Archer McMurran, Jr. Hall, named after the assemblyman whose sponsored legislation led to the schools establishment. In 1971, CNU became a 4 year college however remained an extension of William & Mary until 1977 when it attained its independence. Finally in 1992, the college received university status under the leadership of then president Anthony R. Santoro who oversaw the building of the first residence hall and the original Captain John Smith Library. Eventually former senator Paul S. Trible replaced Santoro as president of the university, after which the former senator announced his plans for the university's expansion. The University is also known for its very strict policy regarding alcohol on campus.

Question: What is Christopher Newport University like? Is it a good school? Good programs, etc.?

I'm looking to transfer from another college into a college on Virginia's coast. Do you recommend CNU? What's it like?

A friend of mine graduated from CNU and she says she got a terrific education there. I hear it is expensive though.

Question: What are my chances of being accepted to Christopher Newport University?

I am currently a rising senior in high school and the college i would really like to attend is Christopher Newport University (CNU) out of Newport News Va. My Cumulative GPA is only a 2.81 but i do have a few extracurriculars. Played football for four years member of International thespian society I've done 3 play productions and i also actively volunteer at a food pantry for people in poverty I guess thats it, not too impressive, but my classes for senior year are pretty challenging. I'm also a 4 year Spanish student. If you've recently gone there or know anything about the school please let me know and what else i could do. i forgot to mention my sat score was 1550 out of 2400, i know cnu omits part of the section but im not specifically sure about what my other score is.

You don't say what your SAT scores were...but a number of my son's friends were accepted with 3.0 GPAs. SAT scores in a good range are important as well. CNU is rising...it's a public 4 year university, recently (a couple years)converted from a community college. Everything is new - the buildings, the labs, the dorms, etc and the school received 400% more applications last year than they did the year before. The administration is committed to growing an excellent school, and are moving very much into the "selective" university realm; this year they were expecting nearly 8000 applications for 1200 spots. According to their website, the AVERAGE GPA is 3.4 and average SAT is 1165. Remember that is average - and if you show a quality first semester of your senior year and good SATs, you have a fighting chance.
