Pacific University - Forest Grove School Description

Pacific University is a comprehensive teaching institution comprised of the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Optometry, Education, and Health Professions. We provide a close-knit environment and challenging opportunities that foster undergraduate education in the liberal arts tradition and graduate education for specific service-oriented professions. At Pacific, effective teaching and learning are the highest priorities. Our faculty of scholars is dedicated to instilling in our students a passion for learning through dynamic curricula and close faculty-student interaction. Pacific creates critical thinkers who become life-long learners who can make informed decisions and valuable contributions to society and the world.

Pacific was founded in 1849 as a place to provide educational opportunities to children who had been orphaned along the Oregon Trail or abandoned when their parents joined the California gold rush. Since our beginning, we continue to embrace that commitment to service and meeting the needs of our students. As a result we are a warm, inclusive university with talented and approachable faculty members.

Our locations offer the best of many worlds, combining the vibrant metropolitan life of nearby Portland, the security and beauty of the small city of Forest Grove, the rich milieu of health care and technology in Hillsboro, and the educational opportunities of Eugene. As a small, private university with a blend of liberal arts, education and health care, our 3,000 students collaborate with faculty, staff and fellow students in small class learning environments carefully designed to help students realize their amazing potential.

We offer a variety of majors—literally anthropology to world languages. We encourage our students to engage in interactive learning through research, community service, internships, and global education. Our students enjoy small class sizes, allowing high quality collaborations with our engaged and engaging faculty—who continually receive high marks from students for excellence in teaching. One measure of the effectiveness of these interactions—Pacific University is second among national universities of our size for being awarded Fulbright Fellowships, one of the most prestigious fellowships for undergraduates.

Our graduate programs in education, optometry and the health sciences are nationally accredited and recognized. Students in our clinical programs are trained in the same manner they will practice—in a co-managed, cross-disciplinary format. Whether in dental science or pharmacy, our faculty and students are recognized as leaders in community service and for their exceptional professional abilities. The connectivity between our undergraduate and graduate programs through our Pathways and Advantages Programs are national models for educational preparation.

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Pacific University is a private university located in Forest Grove, Oregon, United States about 38 km (23 mi) west of Portland. Established as Tualatin Academy in 1849, the school has an enrollment of nearly 3,200 students. Founded by the United Church of Christ (UCC), the university's motto is Pro Christo et Regno Ejus, which is Latin for "For Christ and His Kingdom." Although the university is no longer formally associated with the UCC, it still maintains a close working relationship with the organization. The university is now a small private, independent liberal arts school, offering graduate programs in education, optometry, writing, and health professions.

History

Tabitha Brown, a pioneer emigrant from Massachusetts, immigrated to the Oregon Country over the new Applegate Trail in 1846. After arriving in Oregon she helped to start an orphanage and school along with Rev. Harvey L. Clark in Forest Grove in 1847 to care for the orphans of Applegate Trail party. In March 1848, Tualatin Academy was established from the orphanage with Clark donating 200 acres to the school. George H. Atkinson had advocated the founding of the school and with support of the Presbyterians and Congregationalists helped to start the academy. Eliza Hart Spalding, part of the Whitman Mission, was its first teacher.

The academy was officially chartered by the territorial legislature on September 29, 1849. The reverend Clark served as the first president of the board of trustees and later donated an additional 150 acres to the institution. In 1851, what is now Old College Hall was built and in 1853 Sidney H. Marsh became the school's first president. The current campus was deeded in 1851. In 1854, the institution became Pacific University. The first commencement occurred in 1863 with Harvey W. Scott as the only graduate.

In 1872, three Japanese students started at the university as part of that country's modernization movement, with the three graduating in 1876. These students were Hatstara Tamura, Kin Saito, and Yei Nosea. President Marsh died in 1879 and was replaced by John R. Herrick. In the late 1890s an alumnus gave Pacific a Chinese statuette. The statuette was purchased from a Chinese family who used it as a sort of coat of arms. It appears to be a mix of a several different mythical creatures although it is often simply called a "dragon dog" and serves as the foundation for the university's mascot, the Boxer.

Question: Is it hard to get into University of the Pacific., UOP?

I want to become a pharmacist! Any of you go to UOP in Stockton? Is it hard to get in? What were your scores on the SATs?

Best Answer

I'm not sure about the pharmacy school, but while you do need DECENT scores to get in, its nothing crazy like Stanford in terms of the scores you need. I got average math and advanced english scores for my regular SAT's. Word to the wise- to place for math and science, etc, you have to have taken SAT II's- they don't accept the math from the regular SAT test for math either. But, the placement test was easy, I thought, for the math. Good luck! I love UOP! The application is free- so it can't hurt to apply, either way. Good luck.

Question: University of Pacific (uop)?

hi i m junior 11th grade student living in stockton ca, i want to take visual communication or computer science wen i go to college, n i m planning to go to delta community college n transfer to 4 year uni,,my qus is i've once visited UC berkeley in bay area,n i really liked that uni i want to go to that uni but my dad won't let me he don't want me to leave my family, but UOP is near by me i want to knw your opinion abt UOP...which 1 u think is better uc berkeley or UOP?

University of the Pacific is certainly a good school. They are pretty strong in computer science and they dont have visual communication as a major, but they do have just communication. Have you toured around UOP yet? If not they will have an open house soon(around oct. or nov). UC Berkeley have a national reputation, but UOP does not. I have heard of some stories of computer science majors at UOP before. They did some co-ops during their course of study and they had a job offer for him before he graduated. UOP is very good at helping their students look for jobs, but Berkeley is so big that it is not really possible to do that for their students. UOP focuses more on the students as it is a private college. Tuition is higher but if you qualify for FAFSA it will be quite cheap. You can also try to apply for the CIP program if you are 1st generation college student. There are many benefits of attending this institution. Transfering from delta to either schools are pretty easy, but I think you still have to work on your personal statment. Right now maybe you dont have to worry about it yet. You still have time. If you do end up with a hard time choosing, then you can always go to the transfer/career office and seek for advice there. Hope this may help you! Good luck!

Question: Do I have a chance of getting into University of the Pacific?

I am a sophmore who had a 4.0 both freshman year and first semester sophmore year. However, I might get a C in math, but the rest As. I want to go to the dentistry program there
34 months ago

Best Answer

There's different undergraduate dental programs; you may get into one (such as the 3 + 3 program) but not the most competitive one (the 2 + 3 program). If you keep your grades where they are, you'll remain a candidate for all of them--although they look very tough to get into, so keep your options open. One C in math is not going to kill you. But as dentistry is very science (and therefore, math) based, consistent, across-the-board C's is not going to look good. Make your weak subject your top priority the next few years. Good luck.

Question: Northeastern University or The University of the Pacific...Which one is better on an overall scale ?

I urgently need some advice on which university to attend in terms of the overall performance... both these universities rank 98 on the US News listing. thank you...appreciate your opinions.

Best Answer

Do you want to live on the East Coast or West Coast? That's really all it boils down to. They don't have national reps. I know UOP has several combined programs with their grad schools so if you're interested in one of those, UOP might be attractive if Northeastern doesn't have similar programs. Otherwise, just pick which location you want to live in.
