History

Sacred Heart University was founded in 1963 by the Most Reverend Walter W. Curtis, Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport. It was established to provide the community with an affordable, quality education at a local Catholic university. From its outset, the University bore the mark of innovation. Charting a new direction within American Catholicism, the University was to be led and staffed by the laity independent and locally oriented, serving the needs of the diocese and of southwestern Connecticut.

Signs of the University's growth and vibrancy are evident. Enrollment has risen from the original class of 173 to almost 5,700 full and part-time undergraduate and graduate students, and the faculty has increased from 9 to 187 full-time professors and over 300 adjunct professors.

The University has enhanced the undergraduate student experience in several notable ways. In 1990, it accepted for the first time students who wanted the residential experience. The first dorms Scholars Commons (Previously known as J-Hill), were built 1991. It now has 10 residential buildings with 70% of the full-time undergraduates residing in university housing.

The fact is that if you are annoyed by religion, you should not go to any university with a religious mission. Even the least devout of them will bother you, because they DO follow their religions. Most Catholic schools are not anti-partying (in fact, some are known as party schools, since the Church does NOT ban alcohol), but you do need to be respectful of the school's right to follow the tenets of their own religion. There are, of course, some religious schools where you do need to follow the strictest principles of the religion in question (Bob Jones University, for example), but at ANY religious school, you need to defer to their right to practice the religion upon which the school was founded. About Sacred Heart itself, its website doesn't immediately mark it as being extremely pious in its approach, and there are things on there about Christian-Jewish dialogue which leave me to believe that they aren't extreme. However, they are located in Fairfield, CT., and there is a Jesuit school, Fairfield University, in the same town. Since Jesuit schools are usually the least observant of the Catholic schools, I would imagine that Sacred Heart might need to distinguish itself by being more observant. Just a thought...
I know you could always transfer to a better school such as Columbia from Uconn, but is sacred heart as good?

Sacred Heart is an excellent school in general. However, its strength to any individual depends on the area you are looking to study. Its proximity to New York is certainly a plus as well. Nice campus, good class sizes, good faculty.

The answer depends on which school is stronger in the major you prefer. I personally prefer SHU; it's more outside of NYC although very accessible by Metrorail.

I got accepted at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield and am considering going there. Is this a wise decision? How is the surrounding environment and school overall?

Sacred Heart University isn't all that well known, but it is a decent school that should provide a positive learning environment. You may want to stay overnight in the dorms and meet with a few professors before you make a final decision to see if it aligns with your goals.
Is it a college for students with special needs, or is it a regular University?

Sacred *Heart* University is a well-regarded Catholic university--it regularly cracks U.S. News and World Report's rankings. There may be a Sacred Hearts U for students with special needs, but I haven't heard of it.
