Welcome to East-West University, a private academic institution that for nearly 25 years has been helping hundreds of Chicago Public School students realize their dream of a college education and a better life. A dream that for many would have been unobtainable due to the high costs of higher education.
Since it was founded in 1980, East-West has made affordability, quality instruction, small class size and convenient location the hallmarks of its reputation. A comprehensive financial aid package is available, including institutional scholarships to most students. The annual tuition and fees are among the lowest of any private university in the Midwest.
Located in Chicago’s bustling South Loop area and easily accessible by public transportation, East-West offers bachelor's degrees in such fields as business administration, computer and information science, electronics technology and the liberal arts. In addition, one- and two-year certificates are offered in various areas.
The University has also won acclaim for its electroneurodiagnostic technology (ENDT) program, which trains students to become multi-skilled professional allied health technologists. The success of ENDT has enabled East-West to establish affiliation agreements with such prestigious hospitals as Loyola University Medical Center, Evanston Hospital and the University of Chicago Hospital. It has helped fuel the growth of the campus, which has nearly tripled in enrollment since 1990.
For a relatively small institution, East-West boasts a sizable number of international students. Contributing to the diversity has been an infusion of native speakers of Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Mongolian, Polish, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Singhalese, Spanish, Thai and Urdu.
To better accommodate its students, faculty and staff, the University has recently implemented a state-of-the-art computer technology system and multi-media center.
Co-curricular (outside of the classroom) activities are intended to provide students with the opportunity to be better prepared to fulfill the duties of citizenship in a democratic society and enrich their educational and personal development. Such goals may be accomplished through cultural and social activities, volunteer programs related to the instructional program, athletics and student government.
The University encourages and supports the formation of student organizations and clubs that allow students to work together towards a common goal. All organizations must be approved by the University.
East-West University is primarily a COMMUTER SCHOOL, which means that the majority of our students commute to campus from their residences. East-West University does not have any official student housing accommodations. This helps to keep the cost of education at a minimum*. However, East-West University does offer assistance for eligible students who still wish to pursue independent housing opportunities.
East-West University
East-West University is a private, non-profit, non-denominational college in Chicago's South Loop neighborhood. The University was founded in 1980. East-West offers two and four year degrees and certificates. The university has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 1983.
The university is housed in two buildings connected by a bridge on the third floor. The East Building at 816 S. Michigan was the original home of the university when it opened on September 5, 1980. In 1999, the university acquired The Loftrium Building, also known as the West Building, at 819 S. Wabash Avenue. In 2006, East-West acquired a lot on the southeast corner of 9th Street and Wabash Avenue intended to accommodate classrooms, offices, parking, and student housing.
East-West recorded an enrollment of 1154 students in fall 2007. More than 60% of East-West students are African-American and approximately 15% are Latino, making East-West one of the only majority-minority private four-year colleges in Illinois. The university also has a high percentage of foreign students.
The East-West Perspectives lecture series has attracted prominent speakers such as architect Jeanne Gang, journalist Salim Muwakkil, investment manager Louis Holland, author and labor lawyer Thomas Geoghegan, former Chicago Tribune columnist Mike Conklin, and Beyond the Beltway host Bruce DuMont. The lectures are free, and held on the third Tuesday of the month in October, November, January, February and March; and the third Wednesday of the month in April and May.
