School Description
Provided by Oral Roberts University

Oral Roberts University was founded as a result of the evangelist Oral Roberts obeying Gods mandate to build a university on Gods authority and the Holy Spirit. Gods commission to Oral Roberts was to Raise up your students to hear My voice, to go where My light is dim, where My voice is heard small, and My healing power is not known, even to the uttermost bounds of the earth. Their work will exceed yours, and in this I am well pleased.

Oral Roberts University From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Oral Roberts University or ORU, based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is a charismatic Christian liberal arts university with an enrollment of about 3,790 students from most US states along with a number of international students. The university is named for its founder, evangelist Oral Roberts.

Education

ORU claims "educating the whole person" as one of its core values. According to the university, this means educating the mind, body and spirit. For example, all students are required to attend a physical education course every semester and are expected to maintain personal physical fitness. Students also must attend chapel services twice a week and there are student chaplains for each wing or floor of on-campus housing.

ORU offers undergraduate programs in theology, business, music, communication arts, modern languages, behavioral sciences, graphics, education, chemistry, computer science, mathematical science, engineering, physics, English, history, humanities, government and nursing. The university also has a seminary and a limited graduate education program including a business school.

Student codes

All students are required to sign a pledge stating they will live according to the university's honor code. Prohibited activities include lying, cursing, smoking, drinking, gambling and a range of sexual acts including homosexual behavior. In early 2004 the student dress code was relaxed for the first time in forty years and described as business casual. For most of the school's history men were required to wear button-down shirts and ties while women were required to wear skirts (an exception for winter months was added in 2000). In 2006 campus-wide dress code rules were eased even further, allowing students to wear jeans to class and dress even more casually in non-academic settings. Restrictions on men concerning hair length, facial hair and earrings remain.

It's a fundamentalist Christian school. In my experience (with some of their students), it's frighteningly anti-intellectual, anti-science, and anti-... well... anything that's not Fundie. But your question is about respect for the institution... No... I can't say that it's well respected among my colleagues or among employers in the biological sciences, but that's a pretty limited sample.
What is the academic standing of Oral Roberts University in comparison to other American universities? I've been told it rates in the highest percentile. If I've been misinformed, please enlighten me with correct data.

Oral Roberts is an accredited institution. That is about the only good thing that can be said about it. US News & World Reports ranks it near the bottom of universities that grant masters degrees -- which means it is probably one of the worst universities in the country. According to the Princeton Review, the average SAT score there is 1061 -- which is very low. Only 38% of students graduate in four years -- which is extremely low. Only 36% of the faculty have a PhD -- which is embarrasingly low. The one reason why people choose Oral Roberts is because of the religious affiliation (which they describe as "Charismatic Christian"). Personally, I don't think that should be a determining factor in choosing a university -- but understand that others don't agree with me. The fact is that there are lots of high quality Christian universities -- why choose one that is this bad? In short -- Oral Roberts is a joke.
I've heard that initiation to Oral Roberts university is very questionable and is on the wild side. Let's just say it involves a word in their name.

NO! How silly is that. It is just like being accepted to any other college. It is very strict college where you have to attend chapel at least once a week. There is a curfew and a dress code. And you can be kicked out if you sneak to the boys or girls dorm. And look out for all the gold buildings and the praying hands that are about 20 feet tall. Most of the people that go there are very faith based Christians that believe in the power of prayer.
