Overall
Western Carolina is a great place to live, located in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The area is rich of Cherokee history, and WCU is home to the annual Mountain Heritage Day. People come from all over the country to sell their hand-made dream catchers, pottery, etc., and to perform folk songs. The campus is absolutely beautiful and I'm still not used to my amazing surroundings. Each breath of crisp mountain air purifies me on the inside. It rids my body and mind of urban toxins. The ripe leaves entrance me with their fresh colors of auburn, crimson and yellow. Small creeks and rivers trickle throughout campus, and I frequently stop to observe them for a moment because I admire their tranquility. After touring this campus years ago, I immidiately knew that there's no way I belonged at any other university. I am a Catamount!
Academics
Due to Western Carolina University's small student population, classes are the perfect size (about thirty people). I only have a couple of large classes (about ninety people). This allows students to get to know their professors on a personal level, and the teachers are all very open and welcoming. They strive to make sure every student has the opportunity to succeed. Many of my professors are there for me when I'm struggling with personal issues outside of class, and I'm very comforted knowing that I have such a great support system. With many organizations that are here to help such as the Writing and Learning Commons (WaLC), there's no reason that any student can't be successful in their endeavors. Of course college is going to be challenging, but the workload is just right. WCU has many majors and minors ranging from music to engineering, and everything in between. Students can excel in any area they wish.
College Life
I belong to a mesmerizing habitat of endless, rolling mountains that captivate me at every glance. They are so gracefully pleated and it’s hard to fathom how they were created. Those who say "there's nothing to do in Cullowhee" clearly aren't looking hard enough. Base Camp Cullowhee is our most popular student organization, which sponsors and plans many outdoor activities such as hiking trips, rafting, tubing, kayaking, rock climbing and skiing. Although many students choose to leave campus for the weekends, there is still plenty of do. On the very first weekend that I lived here during freshman year, some friends and I took a trip to a local lake and jumped off of cliffs into the water. It was so fun and exhilirating. You can't do this on just any campus! Athletics aren't WCU's strong point, but our marching band is one that won't ever be forgotton. Known as our "Pride of the Mountains," our band is ranked as the number one collegiate marching band across the country. Students always look forward to their mind-blowing performances at football games. Any student, no matter what year, is allowed a car on campus. Although the freshman overflow parking lot is pretty far away, the Cat Tran is always driving around picking up students, taking them to any destination on campus. The drivers are extremely friendly and love listening to the students' stories as they ride.

Overall
Western Carolina is a great school because they truely want us to enjoy our social life here. The school and Last Minute Productions host stay at Western weekends when they have events that are to encourage students to stay on campus more. There is always some kind of club activity or event on campus to attend. Last week there was a murder mystery dinner which is basically a real life game of Clue. If you are looking for a school that truely appreciates you WCU is the place to be. It may be a small school in a small city but the fact that the school cares about the students so much overcompensates for the size.
Academics
There are a variety of degrees from art to medical sciences and the class size is very small compared to other schools so your professors know and can help you.. My degree is a mixture of the two. With my degree in Communication Sciences and Distorders I hope to go onto grad school and become a speech learning pathologist. I will take all I've learned from my kind but strict professors that I have had at WCU and help change children's speech in nearby elementary schools. Yes there is a lot of work especially in my major because the professors want to prepare you to be accepted into grad school. My major is basically useless without a masters degree so I appreciate my professors challenging me.
College Life
There are a lot of clubs on campus because we are in a small city and there is not much surrounding entertainment. There are also churches for almost every domination either on campus or in close proximity. The football team is not amazing but the students still have school pride and you can see purple and gold all over people's clothing. We have a lot of school spirit and I love that about my small school.

Overall
Overall, the atmosphere at Western Carolina University is AMAZING! The mountain view is breathtaking, the campus is big enough to feel like you are at college, but small enough to maneuver. The classrooms were nice with modern amenities, but since I am a weightlifting buff, my favorite building on campus was the recreational center. It has a large rock wall and a full indoor track. One secret that I can share about my trip to Western was that they have a "pillow room". This is so cool! It is a room full of pillows that students can check themselves into so they can sleep anytime from 8:00-5:00. An attendant will wake them at a designated time like a human alarm clock. Perfect for exam week! I am very excited about my choice to attend WCU! My parents were completely sold, and were ready to enroll for classes and check into the married dorm.
Academics
Western has a variety of programs and as a part of the UNC system, I will be getting a first rate education on a great campus! The smaller class sizes will allow me to participate, not just be a number in the crowd. The professors at the Open House were friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly enjoy what they teach. One such professor, Dr. Martin Tanaka (Asst. Professor of Engineering & Technology) was so personable that he almost made me want to change my major from Criminal Justice to Engineering. Another perk I learned about this weekend was the free tudoring. I hope I don't need it, but glad it is available.
College Life
The students at WCU are offered lots of opportunities to socialize with movie nights, 5K runs, athletics, and discounts at Base Camp Cullowhee. Student retention seems important at this school so helping students succeed academically and socially is obvious. Western PEAKS is available to freshmen to help get them adjusted in all areas of college life. There are hiking, skiing, rock climbing, and white water rafting trips that are also apart of this program. The campus has its own police unit to protect students. Several measures have been put in place with lighting, panic buttons, and police escorts at late hours that are available to students. Safety seems a priority here.

Overall
I really find this school like my home away from home. I believe that if you like small classes and personal attention from teachers this is the place! I am going there this fall! I really find this school one of the best and you will enjoy it.
Academics
Personal attention, small classes. Theater program is excellent. Probably 15:1 student to teacher ratio. The teachers really care what is going, they want to have a personal relationship. The workload I havent had yet.
College Life
It is amazing, you will meet many different people. Its not a huge campus but there is lots going on. They have a starbucks for your coffee needs and have other restaurants that you'd like. They have some athletics, they also have a huge pool!
