In addition, it maintains its one- and two-year programs at a campus in scenic North East, just 20 minutes from Erie. Also, in the fall of 2006, Mercyhurst opened its third campus, Mercyhurst West, in neighboring Girard, Pa.

Mercyhurst offers small classes taught by internationally known professors, and it ranked in the top tier of the BEST UNIVERSITIES-MASTERS in the north by U.S. News & World Report. Mercyhurst College

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Mercyhurst College is a Catholic liberal arts college in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA.

History

On September 20, 1926, Mercyhurst College opened its doors just a few blocks away from the city's southern boundary. It was founded by the Sisters of Mercy of the Erie Diocese, who were led by Mother M. Borgia Egan, first president of Mercyhurst College. The college received its charter on October 5, 1928.

F. Ferdinand Durang was hired prominent to design the Old Main building. It modeled after the English Gothic design. The iron gates at its main entrance on 38th Street were put up in 1950.

On February 3, 1969, the board of trustees voted to make Mercyhurst a coed college.

Since its foundation, members of the Sisters of Mercy had been presidents of the college. After 1972, the college was led by lay presidents.

On March 27, 1991, Mercyhurst purchased the 100-year old Redemptorist Seminary in North East to become a branch campus.

In the past two decades, Mercyhurst has become one of the top comprehensive colleges in the North and the second largest Mercy college in America. Between its two campuses, enrollment has grown to 4,000 students, full-time faculty members number 168, the endowment has increased to more than $20 million and its budget to more than $80 million.

A $40 million program of buildings and campus renovations has changed the look of Mercyhurst during the past 20 years. Old Main remains the center of a campus that includes more than 50 structures. In fall 2002, the $7.5 million Audrey Hirt Academic Center opened on the southeast edge of campus. The building was funded largely through the college’s $22.8 million capital campaign.

In August 2005, the $5 million Michele and Tom Ridge Health and Safety Building was dedicated at Mercyhurst North East. A $1.3 million residential apartment complex opened in time for the academic year.

Question: Is Mercyhurst college a good college for archaeology?

And about how long would it take for me to get my degree in archaeo and anthro?

Mercyhurst is a good college for it. I have a few colleagues that graduated from there. I know a few of the professors as well. You must like winter though being so close to Lake Erie they get a lot of snow. Erie is a pretty cool city too.

Question: Archeology and possible jobs after college?

I got accepted to a really good school for Anthropology and Archeology a few months back (Mercyhurst College), and after some soul searching I decided this is what I would like to study. I got accepted for a B.A. in Anthropology, but I'm going to try and change that to a B.S. in Bioarcheology (the school has a M.S. in Forensic Anthropology that I could try for after my B.S.). Anyways, I'm scared to death that I wont be able to find a job in this career field, but furthermore, any job at all. I can accept that I might not be able to get a job in this sort of thing without moving really far away, but I at least want a job that isnt like sitting at a desk and reading paperwork all day. Any suggestions? Any at all? I'm sort of at a loss for words right now, but I'm just curious if I'm heading the right direction here. Thank you.

I know this isn't exactly what you asked, but I know a great deal about Mercyhurt's forensic program so I figured I would address that for you. Let me start off by saying that Mercyhurst has an EXCELLENT MS in forensic anthropology, however, it is very different from most Masters in forensic anthropology. Most schools take a "four field" approach to any graduate degree. Which basically means that although you may have a focus (mine was forensic anthropology), you are still required to take classes in all four fields of Anthropology. There is a great debate about whether the four field approach is better than say a more applied approach (like at Mercyhurst, where you get drilled intensely in forensic anthropology but not really in cultural anthro or linguistics). That being said, if you are seriously interested in forensic anthropology Mercyhurst is a GREAT stepping stone to get to a top PhD program (Marcyhurst is becoming a pipeline to U of Tennessee, which is probably the first or second best school in the country for forensic anthropology...I think U of FL is right up there with Tennessee). The forensic anthropology field in the US is dominated by graduates from U of Tennessee, not to mention the FBI recruits agents and scientists from there as well. Further, the Smithsonian in Washington also has U of Tennessee grads. I guess what I'm basically trying to say is that if you get a MS from Mercyhurst and go on to get a PhD, you will probably not have a problem getting a job in forensic anthropology. Either as a professor, at a coroner's office, museum, etc. U of Tennessee has great networking and by association Mercyhurst does as well. I'm sorry I couldn't give you more information about the archaeology side of things but I did take a course there called "Death Scene Archaeology" so I know they do an excellent job of combining archaeological techniques with forensics. If you have any more questions about this, feel free to contact me.
