Florida State University

From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

Florida State University (commonly referred to as Florida State or FSU) is a public research university located in Tallahassee, Florida. It is a comprehensive doctoral research university with medical programs and significant research activity as determined by the Carnegie Foundation. The university comprises 16 separate colleges and 39 centers, facilities, labs and institutes that offer more than 300 programs of study, including professional programs. In 2005 Florida State University's President launched "Pathways of Excellence", a major academic initiative that was proposed by a faculty committee to hire hundreds of new faculty to help position FSU for future membership in the Association of American Universities.

Florida State is one of two flagship universities in the State University System of Florida. As one of Florida's primary graduate research universities, Florida State University awards over 2,000 graduate and professional degrees each year. In 2007, Florida State was placed in the first tier of research universities by the Florida Legislature, a distinction allowing FSU, along with the University of Florida, to charge 40% higher tuition than other institutions in the State University System of Florida. While FSU was officially established in 1851 and is located on the oldest continuous site of higher education in the state of Florida, at least one predecessor institution may be traced back to 1843, two years before Florida was admitted as a state in the United States.

Florida State University is also home to nationally ranked programs in many academic areas, including the sciences, social policy, film, engineering, the Arts, business, political science, social work, medicine and law. Florida State is home to Florida's only National Laboratory - the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and is the birthplace of the commercially-viable anti-cancer drug Taxol. The Florida State University athletics programs are favorites of passionate students, fans and alumni across the United States, especially when led by the Marching Chiefs of the FSU College of Music. Florida State is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference and has won twelve national athletic championships as well as multiple individual competitor NCAA championship awards.

OK well i hear it is much easier to get into summer session than fall so if i apply to fall session but am rejected would the school tell me weather or not i am accepted to summer despite the fact i applied for fall?
Best Answer
Nope, they will only consider you for the semester you are applying for. The admissions office has thousands of applications to go through every semester and they pick the ones they want to admit from the pool of applicants they have for that semester. So you might get accepted one semester when you would have been rejected another semester. It all depends on if you meet their admissions standards and the pool of applicants for that semester. You will have to apply for summer if you want to get into summer semester.
The time has come, I'm finally a senior!!! I have to apply to colleges, and I have no idea where I want to go. I was looking around and I found out about the University of South Florida. I'm from Louisiana so I don't know anything about Florida Universities. Is it really as good as Florida State and the University of Florida, or is it like the reject school. what is there reputation???

For a while it was kind of like the Plan B school for locals, but their standards and reputation have both been rapidly increasing in recent years. It's not a "reject school" by any means. It can be pricey if you're coming in from out-of-state, though, that's the only thing. What you should do is figure out a general idea of what you would like to study, then apply to universities which offer the best programs in that particular field and also related fields. University of South Florida has top-notch medical programs (doctoral and nursing), engineering programs, and education programs. Their College of Business Administration is also very well-respected within the area and many of the programs within the College of Arts and Sciences are worthwhile as well. I think the Religious Studies program at USF, last I heard, is one of the largest Religious Studies programs in the American university system. Good luck with your applications!
I currently do not live in Florida, but I am a rising senior in high school and I am trying to get a little information on Florida State University. Do students like it there, is the area a good place for college atmosphere...just over all what are your thoughts about Florida State?

FSU is in Tallahassee, FL located in the panhandle of Florida and it is the Capital of Florida so there are a lot of politicians running around. It is a growing medium sized city with reasonable cost of living. Tallahassee Community College is the local community college and is a pipeline to FSU. My brothers went to FSU and they had a good time and they seemed to like it a lot. It seems to me that the campus is a lot more diverse than University of Florida and the students seem friendlier. There is a good college nightlife at FSU. Overall, it is a good choice. Keep your grades up though because they are raising their entry standards.
I'm planning on to major in sports medicine and i was looking into Florida State University. My boyfriend is in the Air Force down in florida and i wanted to be closer to him. But me going to FSU isn't all just about him, it's about what i want too. I was wondering if it is a good school and if many out of state students go there, cause i live in New York. I just want to know everything about FSU and i need some help. My mom or my dad didn't go to college so i'm the first one and need help deciding. So if anyone can tell me about FSU and what their requirements are. I have good grades and im an outstanding athlete at me school, but my SAT score isn't that good. I got a 1250. But yeah. I need help. If anyone can help that would be great. Thanks.

FSU is a good school and there are a good number of out of state and international students there. It is located in Tallahassee, which is the capital of Florida and a small to medium sized city. The cost of living is pretty cheap there also. They do have a grant in Florida for people that are the first ones out of their families to go to college but I don't know if that applies to out of state students. FSU is becoming more restrictive on admissions so you need to ask them. Here is a webpage that might answer some of your questions. http://www.fsu.edu/students/
If I have a 3.8 GPA 1000 on SAT and 24 on ACT do I have a good chance of getting accepted into FSU

Well, FSU admission standards aren't all that high, but your SAT is pretty low. I'd take it again to bump your score up. If you can get around 1150 I'd say you have a good chance of getting in.
I am graduating from high school soon and I want to apply there but I want to know what its like. How is the area? On campus are there a good number of minority students? I know the percentages but that doesnt really help me to know what it will be like because im used to living in a place where the race representation is pretty equal. Are they good resources for premed students? Please just share any information you know about the university.

I am graduating from FSU in August. Tallahassee is a small town with 3 colleges and a state capitol - that's a lot of college students. The night life is pretty crazy, if you look, you will find a party, maybe sometimes even when you're not looking. It's an experience living here, although there aren't any close cities besides Panama City (if you can call that one) or Jacksonville which is a 3 hour drive. The airport is the size of a pack of gum, so it doesn't really make a lot of sense to use it. I think that there is a good mix of minority students, especially with FAMU in Tallahassee. I'm not a premed student, but I know a few and they seem to be happy with the resources. The school is building a lot of new science buildings as we speak, I'd say the premed kids are a little spoiled compared to the rest of the student body. All I can say is that I love here. It can be a little overwhelming if you move here without knowing anyone, but there are plenty of organizations to get involved with on campus to make friends.
In specific University of Central Florida, Florida state, u of florida for student from boston graduating from high school in 2008. My high school gpa is 3.3 but i read on collegeboard.com that those schools accept about 7-15 percent out of state so common sense tells me that the out of state students must be top students. Like 3.6+gpa

Don't listen to "Sharp with.." Florida colleges, especially FSU and UF, rank among the tops in the nation in many programs. If you take the expensive private universities (Harvard, Yale, etc.) out of the equation they seem even higher. My suggestion is to apply to a couple that you might like to go to. I think the application fee might still be $20 or so. Worst case scenario is you don't get in. The reason it is hard to get in is because they are state universities and try to cater to their own residents first.

I am just finishing my first year at FSU and must say that I like it very much here. The campus here is easier to navigate and so much prettier than any other campus I've seen. There is a wide range of classes available and FSU has tons of activities around campus. Tallahassee is a great city to live in, it may not be a very small city, but it has the feel of a small town. Everything is pretty close together, which makes getting around very easy. There is a lot of public transportation available (both on campus and off), and although Tallahassee might not always have a lot going on, there is usually something going on around campus. A friend of mine had a pretty bad experience in the dorms, her roommate was terrible to her, but I suppose that kind of thing could happen anywhere. I would recommend you look into an apartment though, there are some very nice apartments near campus that aren't very expensive if you have a roommate.
Hello, I am trying to decide which university to go to for grad school..My degree will be in social work. I really want to go to NYU because I knoow that it is very well know school and I am anxious to move away from home..but it is very expensive. So, I am considering attending a university in Florida...because it is ALOT cheaper...the only thing is that I would still be close to home. So, does anyone have advice on what they think I should do? Thanks.

I hold an MSW from FSU. It's a fine degree and very employable...it all depends on what you want. Are you going for an LCSW? Florida is very competitive, as is New York. In almost every state, you can just use what you already have - - but NOT Floria OR New York. So ask yourself where you see yourself working when you're through. Also ask yourself if you see yourself getting still more education after your degree (I did - and the debt racks up, believe me- in-state tuition is a lifesaver). You could always go to school in FL and then study and sit for your LCSW in NY...
