MISSION
THE MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF LIBRARY SCIENCE OF CLARION UNIVERSITY IS TO EDUCATE INDIVIDUALS FOR CAREERS IN A DIVERSE INFORMATION SOCIETY.
GOALS
I. Education -Teach students the major theories, principles, and current and emerging practices in the field
II. Leadership and Service- Instill in students the qualities, knowledge, skills, and passion inherent in effective leaders and modeled by the faculty through their research and service
III. Research - Teach students to understand, design, conduct, and disseminate research in the library professions and related disciplines
IV. Professional Development - Provide Opportunities for lifelong learning
OBJECTIVES/COMPETENCIES
To meet each of the four goals, the following student competencies have been developed. These competencies are intended to serve as a guide to faculty, students, and employers regarding the knowledge, skills and attitudes which the department expects of all of its M.S.L.S. graduates.
Each student will necessarily develop additional capabilities in their chosen specialization. Infused in these competencies is the department's conviction, as reflected in its curriculum, that the nature and role of information in society, the appropriate use of technology in the provision of library services, and the profession's commitment to intellectual freedom are fundamental to librarianship.
Clarion graduates will:

Understand and apply the theory and practice of organizing information in libraries and information centers

Clarion University of Pennsylvania is an accredited university located on a 100 acre campus in Clarion, Pennsylvania, and one of fourteen universities of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). Clarion University was founded in 1867 and offers associate's, bachelor's, master's and post master's certificates. Currently the university undergoing major constructional changes that will allow for further growth and development.
As of 2008, Clarion university's student body totaled 6,591 students, of which 5,927 were undergraduates and 1,299 of those were freshmen. The university's students are mostly female (61%). 96% of students come from the state of Pennsylvania while the remaining 4% come from 37 other states and 27 other countries.
The University maintains a regional campus, Venango Campus in Oil City, and a site in Pittsburgh at West Penn Hospital. Clarion also offers an extended studies program featuring online courses, remote sites, and various hybrid learning situations.
