The first Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, three young French women motivated by the love of God and their recognition of God's presence in each person, came to San Antonio in 1869 to minister to the sick and the poor. Their spirit of Christian service is perpetuated in the University of the Incarnate Word primarily through teaching and scholarship. Inspired by Judeo-Christian values, the University aims to educate men and women who will become concerned and enlightened citizens.

The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is located in the Alamo Heights neighborhood of San Antonio, Texas. It is a private Catholic university located on with notable campus extensions in the People's Republic of China also called "China Incarnate Word" and in Mexico called the "Centro Universitario Incarnate Word. The University has over 70 Sister schools around the world and its study abroad program is unmatched in the San Antonio area. One of the more popular programs is the John Cabot University study abroad program in Rome, Italy. As of Spring 2007, the university was the largest Catholic university and the fourth largest private university in the state of Texas.
Incarnate Word was founded in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word who came to San Antonio at the request of Bishop Claude Dubuis. Through their acts of mercy, they founded several schools, hospitals, and academies.
The University is home to the Feik School of Pharmacy, the AT&T Math, Science, & Engineering center, The Dreeben School of Education, The H.E.B. School of Business, The Christus Santa Rosa Nursing School, and the School of Interactive Media & Design. The University also participates with E-Army-U, the U.S. Army's online portal for e-learning.
The University also operates an all-girls high school, Incarnate Word High School, as well as a coeducational high school, St. Anthony Catholic.
Newly constructed buildings such as the Pharmacy school and the "Hillside" dormitory will be ready for the entering Fall class of 2007. Construction will also begin in June 2007 of the new Tom Benson fieldhouse. The remodeling of the Fine arts building, Administration building, and Construction of our New Student Center will begin in the coming months.
The Cardinals at the University of the Incarnate Word will being playing football in the fall of 2009; it will be the only NCAA Division II team in the San Antonio metropolitan area.
