Assumption College School Description

Assumption College, rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition, strives to form graduates known for critical intelligence, thoughtful citizenship and compassionate service. We pursue these ambitious goals through a curriculum grounded in the liberal arts and extending to the domain of professional studies. Enlivened by the Catholic affirmation of the harmony of faith and reason, we aim, by the pursuit of the truth, to transform the minds and hearts of students. Assumption favors diversity and ecumenically welcomes all who share its goals.

Assumption offers a classic liberal arts education and strong business and professional programs. Our students are exposed to an array of disciplines that expand their minds and enhance their critical thinking skills as they consider new ideas, new ways of looking at the world, and new ways of questioning. Faculty members create an academically stimulating environment that challenges students to achieve their full potential as they think through their values and life. At the same time, the skills students learn at Assumption also prepare them for successful and rewarding careers.

Our strong Catholic intellectual tradition immerses students in the works of the world’s greatest writers, thinkers and artists to explore the connections between faith and reason. As a Catholic institution in the Assumptionist tradition, we take religion and faith seriously as an integral part of the human experience. We explore questions that get to the deepest desires of the human heart and recognize the role of faith and reason in the search for truth. By highlighting the Catholic intellectual tradition, our students encounter ideas that have contributed to the formation of a Christian outlook on the world that reflects the type of education envisioned by Fr. Emmanuel d’Alzon, the founder of the Assumptionists. Whatever a student’s faith, we believe that the Assumption experience provides opportunities for personal spiritual growth and the development of a set of values that will encourage students to use their knowledge in service to others. It is an atmosphere that is intellectually challenging, personally rewarding and spiritually fulfilling.

Assumption is a place where people look out for one another. When you choose Assumption, you can count on receiving personal attention from kind, friendly people throughout the community. Faculty, administrators, staff, religious, and students all work together to ensure that everyone here is valued and supported. Assumption is small enough so that people know students as individuals, and large enough for students to find diverse opportunities. Experiences inside and outside the classroom help shape a student’s “personal compass” and encourage intellectual, social, and personal growth.

College history

Undergraduate day college

Assumption was founded in 1904 by the Augustinians of the Assumption, a Catholic order under the Augustinian Rule dedicated to service through teaching and the dogma of the Assumption of Mary. The original campus was in the Greendale section of Worcester, on a tract of hillside land. In these early years, enrollment was exclusively male, primarily of French-Canadian heritage. Most courses were taught in French, with only a small number taught in English.

In June 1953, a tornado cut a path of destruction through several western and central Massachusetts communities, including the city of Worcester. Several campus buildings were destroyed or severely damaged by this tornado. Although the Assumption Preparatory School stayed on the rebuilt campus until about 1970, the College relocated to a new campus off Salisbury Street, in the west side of the city, officially opening in 1956. The old Assumption campus complex was sold to the state after the prep school closed and is today the home of Quinsigamond Community College.

In 1969, Assumption became a coeducational institution, allowing both laymen and -women into the faculty and female students into its programs of study.

Centennial festivities began early in January 2004, celebrating the College's 100th year. On February 15, 2007, the Assumption College Board of Trustees announced that Dr. Francesco Cesareo, an author and historian, would succeed President Thomas R. Plough on July 1, 2007. As the 15th president of the institution, Plough oversaw an aggressive eight-year Centennial Campaign that raised over $33 million for campus renovations and construction.

Question: How highly regarded is Assumption College?

Hey, I'm a sophomore at Assumption College in Massachusetts prob. majoring in accounting, and right now I'm putting 100% into studies so I can get a good job. Is Assumption highly regarded by employers? Any help would be appreciated. I just wanna make sure it's the right choice. How about an answer from someone who knows the school?

I would think Assumption would be fairly highly regarded by employers. Most people around here know that's it a good school. A friend of mine graduated from there with a degree in Accounting and now he has a great job in Boston making great money. He went on to get his Master's from Northeastern, but he had the good job before he started grad school.

Question: Is Assumption College a good school? I like it, but thoughts of transferring have floated through my head.?

It's not that I don't like it, but when I made the decision to go here it was kind of a shot in the dark. My other options at the time were: Rivier College Merrimack College St. Joseph's College of Maine Westfield State College UMass Lowell Suffolk University I'm a political science major.

Of the schools you listed, to be honest, Assumption is among the strongest and best reputed. Unless Assumption was a poor fit - and it's not - I wouldn't have you transfer to one of these other schools. I don't see the benefit. And some of these would actually be a step down. If you wanted to take a step up, you could consider UMass Amherst, Fordham, Boston College, Boston University, Notre Dame, Fairfield University, and Providence College. Maybe Tufts and Brandeis. Those kind of have the vibe your list gave me, but are more competitive schools than the ones that you mentioned, and on a par with Assumption or a clear step up. But Assumption is a good school. It's better than most of the other schools on your list. If you like it, stay there.
